There was semi powerful one in my back door, 6.6 to 6.8 RS apparently.
I felt it very well and I am over 200 miles away from it in Wellington.
Initial reports of 3 collapsed buildings, 2 roof collapses and lots and lots of broken windows.
There would have been more damage if it was centered on land but it was 30 miles offshore so not as bad???

Lombard, my family lived in Japan when I was six and we experienced several earthquakes. One literally dumped us out of bed in the middle of the night and pulled the 6" baseboards about 2" out from the walls. To this day I am terrified of them ........ way more than tornados or hurricanes, which I have also experienced. I guess the traumas of childhood go the deepest!
Lombard you are lucky the earthquake was centered at sea. I was in the Loma Prieta earthquake on 10/17/89 it was 6.8 and did a lot of damage it caused 63 deaths and 3,757 injuries. These totals are so high becuase the upper deck of part of the freeway collapsed on the lower deck killing and trapping people. This is the first time baseball saved lives because a lot of people were not on the freeway they were at home preparing to watch the world series Oakland A's vs San Francisco Giants. I was watching tv seems you have a couple of aftershocks. That is the thing that is scary about an earthquake that size for the next few days you get aftershocks. It's looks like you have had 4 aftershocks ranging bewteen 4.5-3.4. Hang in there.
