NCl has cancelled the 9 day/5 day Caribbean itinerary of the Norwegian Pearl for October 2008 through March 2009, so our cruise has been cancelled. This was to be a first for us in a couple of ways. It was going to be our first experience with NCL's Freestyle cruising, and we were quite anxious to give it a try. It was also going to be our first experience with a category AE Penthouse Suite, with butler and concierge service, as well as certain dining options reserved only for suite passengers. We haven't booked a replacement yet for two reasons. First, NCL is not price protecting people for the same itinerary and cabin category on another ship, and an already pricey cruise is going to be even pricier if we rebook the exact same thing on another ship. The other reason we haven't rebooked is that I am going in for surgery for uterine cancer on January 7th and will be off work for a while to recuperate. I don't know yet if my employer is going to require me to use my vacation time or if I will be paid my regular salary since I am salaried, not hourly. I never miss work except for vacations, but I just don't know yet how this will be handled. We would have let the cruise ride to see how all this works out, but since NCL is canceling it on us, we'll just wait and see before we book anything else.
That is a bummer, and I certainly hope you find a great replacement cruise.
Worse news yet is your upcoming surgery. Just want you to know that we wish you the very best outcome! We'll certainly be thinking of you. And look forward to cruising with you and Jose again sometime in the not too distant future.
I too am very sorry for all the news that was included in your post.
I know you must surely be disappointed! I pray that your surgery goes well, and somehow it all works out that you will be able to have your regular vacation time and will be feeling revitilazied and ready to go as soon as you find a suitable replacement cruise.
Keep us posted on both accounts. Wishing you health and healing and happy days ahead!
What a shame about the cruise, I am sorry that it got cancelled. I am terribly sorry to hear of your surgery. Prayers and good thoughts on the way to you.

Dezertcruzer just to let you know the Family Medical Leave act is a Federal law. In California we have the Paid Family Medical Leave Act a higher amount of SDI is withheld from our paychecks to cover it. Here is information on the act. http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/ This website will give you some good information. You may be required to use vacation time however.

Jennifer, sorry to hear your cruise was cancelled.
But more importantly I am sorry to hear you are battling cervical cancer. I pray that God will guide your surgeon's hand and you enjoy a full and quick recovery.
If it makes you feel any better NCL cancelled my cruise too. Of course under totally different circumstances, but never the less, I felt all better as soon as I booked one on a different cruise line lol!
Take care of you first, then the cruise planning will begin. Take care, I'll be thinking about you.
First of all, thank you all SO much for your kind wishes. This is a great and caring community.
I know that my health and recovery come first, but as fellow cruise enthusiasts, I also know that you all understand how having that cruise to look forward to would CERTAINLY help me to heal faster and more fully. !!
I will talk to my employer this week before surgery, now that he is back from vacation, and I should know the answer about my vacation time before I go to the hospital. And, if the news is favorable, I can spend the recovery time here at home searching for a replacment cruise!
Beenie weenie, tell me about your NCL cruise being cancelled.
As far as NCL and the cancellation, I fully understand that the cruise lines need to rethink itineraries and repositioin ships and sometimes, if you've booked a long time in advance, you will be the unfortunate recipient of those decisions. I do, however, think it is NOT smart business on their part to not simply transfer those bookings, intact, as far as possible, to other ships doing the same itineraries. It might not be 100% possible due to existing reservations on the second ship, and I understand that. But to simply cancel your booking and say that you'll have to start over at the prevailing rate on another ship is a good way to alienate customers.
This is our second cancelled NCL cruise, so it looks as if we may never get to try them, ! The first was unavoidable, as we were booked on the Norway for shortly after the boiler room explosion which ended her cruising life and took the lives of, I think, 8 crew members. That was very, very sad.
Well Ms. Jennifer, I wasn't going to bore you with al the gorey details but since you asked. Fasten your seat belt, this is a long story... I am cutting and pasting a portion of a letter I sent to NCL's Executive offices since I no longer trust my memory and I am sure I will leave something out. Names have been changed to protect the guilty...lol.
While on our recent cruise on the Pearl we purchased a Cruise Reward Certificate. We asked "JD" the Cruise Consultant prior to purchasing it if we could use the certificate to book a cruise immediately as we would like to book prior to Dec. 1, to avoid the fuel surcharge. He said yes, no problem, you could use it to book any cruise regardles
Since his demeanor reminded me of a slick used car salesman, I waited until our certificate was delivered to our cabin and while we were in Grand Cayman I called NCL to attempt to book the cruise we were interested in. I was informed that we could not use the cruise rewards until they posted to our Latitudes account, which would likely take 30 days. I returned to inform "JD" of this and see what his plan was to make good on what he promised. He said he had to call Phoenix to get it resolved. Two days later (the last day of our cruise) he called our room and left a message stating that I should call "RW" at NCL extension ###. As soon as we got off the ship I called him and "RW"with his cocky attitude informed me that he would not make the booking for me since he knew I would just move the booking over to my Travel Agent. I have never known that to be an issue so I told him that was not acceptable and I wanted to speak to his supervisor. He put me on hold for several minutes and then came back and said his supervisor told him to go ahead and make the booking. I was given booking number #########. I logged into the NCL website tonight about one month after the initial booking to find that our reservation had been cancelled. I first spoke to "R@NCL call center" who said they reinstated the reservation, I wanted to know why it was cancelled in the first place and she said the system automatically did it because our deposit was never applied to it. That is ridiculous. She said they would be going to the Latitudes desk to get the cruise rewards applied etc.. which was what "RW" was supposed to have been doing in the first place. I then spoke to another supervisor because we would then be charged whatever the going rate was for the cabin plus the fuel surcharge etc and it was going to be substantially higher. By the time I got off the phone with all these poor unprofessional, uninformed people, I told them to just forget about it, I was going to book my reservation with a cruise line that didn't make me work so hard to spend my money with them.
To make a long story short, RW didn't follow through on our reservation to ensure that our Cruise Reward was applied to our reservation, and rather than doing as he was supposed to do, he allowed our reservation to cancel out automatically because it showed as not having a deposit because he didn't apply the deposit to it.
Here's the really stupid part of my whole story.... I thought about it and sent this email to Colin Vetch at NCL and thought well maybe he'll get this all straightened out...It's amazing, he had the original idiot "RW" email me and it said:
"All though we got off to a rocky start, I am willing to help you with
I made the mistake of not following up to make sure that the cruise reward
Call or email if you would like me to reinstate this reservation without the
OK I'll admit at this point I have a pretty bad attitude about this whole experience. But doesn't it sound like this guy thinks he's doing me a big favor? Especially this line,
"All though we got off to a rocky start, I am willing to help you with
The reason we got off to a rocky start is that he refused to book the reservation. Where do they find these guys?
Gee thanks, but no thanks! He has not been much help at all so far, I don't think I'll give it another shot.
I wrote "RW" back and copied Colin Veitch and told "RW" I had enough of his "help" and that employees like him cost their employers thousands of dollars and chase off paying customers like me.
It's hard for me not to take these sorts of situations personally. I have another NCL Cruise in March I booked quite a while ago and I thought about cancelling it, but honestly it is a good price for a nice 14 day repo NOLA to NYC and the kid's love the ship, and so do I. But geez louise, I really do hate their land based operations. For the most part once you get onboard it is fine.
As for the Transatlantic I booked a two room family suite on MSC. It is an 18 day cruise from Genoa to FLL and I know it will be a different experience, but hey we'll try anything once.
DezertCruzer, I hope your surgery goes perfectly well.
Remember you can always book another cruise. That would have made me mad also. (I,too, am trying NCL for the first time in March/08.)
Take care of yourself. Sincerely, Brenda in Canada
NCL Jewel March 14/08(Southern Caribb.)VALOR Jan. 7 /07(Western Caribb. again!)
VALOR Jan/05-our first family cruise was great!
WOW Beenie Weenie,
That's some crazy, zany runaround those **edited** gave you!
I've been put on the spot myself a few times with kind of similar situations, the last time was a fool CSR behind the purser's desk on the NCL Wind. She threatened to call security on me and that is exactly what I challenged her to do.
So security come and go, and I was still standing my ground on the issue. Chief Purser and Hotel Director ended moving us into a suite on that particular cruise, when I got back I did not let this go until we ended up receiving a 50% off next cruise letter from NCL plus $100 each shipboard credit (for 2 persons).
Again this was all due to those fools not delivering on what was promised when we purchased cruise credit on a prior sailing. A clearcut case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.
I'll get off the soapbox now.
