Default Harrassment Calls

Lately we have been bothered by people looking for "Melissa." Some female gave out our phone number, and our phone provider can do nothing. Keith keeps getting passed on to people who don't know what to do, either.

I Googled the full name and also looked on Zabasearch, but there are a million Melissa Phillips. Looks like we have three choices: put up with it; let the answering machine take all calls; or get an unlisted phone number replacing a number we've had for 40 years.

Anybody else out there who have had this problem? I'd like to know what you did to stop it. Thanks!

Judy

Also, you can get caller ID.

If we don't recognize a caller, or if there is no data, we let it go to the answering machine. If they're legit, they'll leave a message.

We had to get the caller ID because Terry has a relative who is nuts and regularly makes abusive calls. So we never pick up when she calls. Sometimes she rants into the machine, but we just erase it.

We've had the same number since 1972.

I feel your pain! Our business numbers were "reissued" to us and the previous owners of the number were very popular insurance brokers; 2 1/2 years later we still get calls on a daily basis... the worst are the automated calls we get for insurance seminars and products... we couldn't change the numbers as we already had our trucks marked, letterhead, etc.. before we knew we were going to get all these calls.

At this point I feel like I know the prior owners of the number, as even their friends, relatives, long lost employees etc have called the numbers on a regular basis. In fact, I got invited to a Christmas party by one of their friends.... didn't go, but I should have and passed out cards saying that Mr. and Mrs. J have changed their numbers and to quit calling me

Caller ID doesn't work for us unfortunately.

Can you change your answer machine for a while to state "you have reached [tel number] and if you are looking for Melissa Phillips, you have the wrong number. Please correct your records and cease calling.
Then screen your calls until it is over.

Until recently, whenever I would arrive at my home in NC, I would find the answering machine "full" of Wells Fargo messages looking for some guy named Woodard. Apparently, the deadbeat gave my phone number as his when filling out his paperwork knowing full well he was going to miss mortgage payments. When I called to complain about it, Wells Fargo told me that I had to actually pick up the phone when they were calling and talk to the person making the call to him. If I did that, they would be able to enter the info into the computer then and there about it being a wrong number. So I did just that the next time they called looking for him, which was later that same day.....wha-la...no more calls. At least from Wells Fargo...I still am getting credit card companies looking for him too. At least they aren't as aggressive about it as WF was who was calling every day and sometimes twice a day.

Default Harrassment Calls

AR, we already have Caller ID. It worked for a short time, but then "they" started using 800 numbers.

Inis46, Keith suggested that same message on the message machine. Maybe we'll do it.

I agree with the rest:

Caller ID is a good thing. I have used it for years. I screen the majority of my calls. If I know the person or business I answer the call. If I don't it goes to voice mail.

In situations like this where someone has given out an incorrect number the best thing you can do is just ride it out. In a few weeks or a couple of months people will realize that it's not "Melissa's" number and quit calling.

We had the same sort of problem a few years ago but it was when the Minneapolis area added area codes. Somehow the same seven digit number became a cell phone number in the 612 area code.

Then again you can do the "cruel" thing to people who keep calling. Just tell them "Melissa's in jail for ten years.". My son did that when he kept getting calls for some unknown person and after that they stopped.

Take care,
Mike

I have had a couple of instances when I have gotten messages left on the machine for others, and they sounded important, I called the number back to let them know they contacted the wrong party. One was a Dr. and one was an elderly woman...

Try caller ID block. When someone calls you a generic pre recorded message will ask the caller their name at that point the call will be forwarded to your phone. When you answer the prerecored message will say "you have a call from Melissa" At that point you can either accept the call or hang up. The message is recorded but the person calling uses their own voice in the tape. So you hear the persons voice and their name. This feature is not available in all areas. Check with your phone company to see if you can get it.

My business phone used to be very close to Delta Airlines number, and I'd get no less than half a dozen calls a day from people who mis dialed looking for flight information. One day, after a particularly stressful work load, and a LOT of Delta calls, some poor soul called and wanted to know when the next flight to Chicago was. I told him to come on out to the airport,,,,as Delta was ready when he was. Yea,,,I know I shouldn't have done that!

I had the problem with calls and snail mail to a certain former friend who used my address and phone and then defaulted on several loans. I wrote "deceased" on the bills and gave callers the forwarding address and phone number to the state hospital for the criminally insane.

Worked like a charm!!!

I have to laugh, today while I was out, I got another wrong message on my machine, it was from a woman, wecloming home her parents from a vacation...I wondered if it was a cruise!

This happens so often to me..I mention something, as I did in this thread, and it happens again! This time I didn't call, and, tell them they had the wrong number.....

, you just reminded me of something else that happened while I was in NC a couple of weeks ago. Someone left an important sounding message to call them back, no name for the person they were calling. I called them and asked what they wanted. Turns out they were a collection agency and were looking for my x's new wife! I kind of find that funny in a warped sense of way...... 8)

You could get hold of the sound recording that plays when a phone has been disconnected....then record that onto your answering machine.

The message is out there in the net in .wav format.
