Default Genesis-class Ships: Oasis of the Seas, Allure

What Do You Think of the New Names?

5-23-08
Genesis-class Ships to be Named: Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas
Royal Caribbean has announced the new names for the two new Genesis-class ships currently under construction in Finland. The two names were chosen as the result of a contest where cruisers were asked to submit pairs of names. The winning pair: Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, submitted by George Weiser, of Livonia, Michigan. From here on out, the class of ships will be referred to as the "Oasis-class" of ships, ending the term "Genesis-class."

The name "Oasis of the Seas" was selected from more than 91,000 entries in Royal Caribbean's "Name that Ship" contest, which the cruise line launched on January 18 in partnership with USA TODAY. Entrants were invited to submit two names ending in "of the Seas." The criteria was that the name should "best encapsulate the universe of experiences a Royal Caribbean cruise provides guests." Royal Caribbean says the contest marks the first time members of the general public, outside of the cruise industry, have been given the opportunity to name a cruise ship.

Weiser's names scored the highest among all contest entries considered by a panel of judges. Weiser is joined by Jennifer Conley, of Robertsville, Missouri, who suggested Mystique of the Seas and also Allure of the Seas. Conley is also a winner in the naming contest for earning the second-highest score.

The "Name that Ship" contest was judged by a panel of cruise industry experts including Lauren Teton, founding partner of Name One!, which specializes in finding unique names for products and business entities; John Maxtone-Graham, maritime historian, lecturer and author of numerous books, including the latest, "Normandie: France's Legendary Art Deco Ocean Liner"; and Albert Mehrabian, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Psychology at UCLA and author of more than 14 books, including "Baby Name Report Card: Beneficial and Harmful Baby Names."

"I was very pleased with the final selection and for being invited to take part in the contest," said John Maxtone-Graham, maritime historian.

When launched in late 2009, Oasis of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world. She will span 16 decks, encompass 220,000 gross registered tons, carry 5,400 guests, and feature 2,700 staterooms. The ship will homeport in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 2010, she will be joined by a sister ship, Allure of the Seas. Additional information is available at www.oasisoftheseas.com.

I love the names, especially after watching the 8 minute video of the ships features, never in a million years would I think this would become reality.

I'd actually love to see a Cruisemates group cruise on Oasis :-) The idea of the theater in the aft section with water type shows, amazing. Those loft balcony cabins are to die for as well.

Only main drawback with having that huge theater in the back, no aft balcony cabins that I've learned to love so much. I think the other features of the ship will make up for that, not a problem.

I agree with Norm and Dean regarding the size of these ships.......and I don't like the names! Oasis to me, means a small secluded area, not a behemoth ship. Allure of the Seas.......just pain not making sense in my little corner of the world.

I like the names and I plan to cruise on both of those ships. Sometimes bigger is better, and you can't get too much of RCCL.

I see they have released deck plans for Oasis. Is anyone else surprised at the cabin sizes? I think the standard cabins (non-suites) are a bit on the small side, while the Royal Loft suite is 50% bigger than my first house!

I'm not at all surprised at the size of the cabins. RCI has always had smaller than normal cabins, as they squeeze every last guest aboard they can.

I have to disagree Sky about the cabin size. The cabins on the Freedom and Voyager class are plenty big, the largest I've had cruising. Now, the older ships, very true, very small cabins.

I'm up for anything that's not a repeat of another cruise line. Frankly I'm getting tired of the ships having the same names. Carnival and Royal Caribbean's Freedom, Liberty, Legend, Splendour/Splendor, NCL & Royal's Majesty & Jewel, NCL's & Carnival's Dream. Be creative people, come up with something unique!! I like Allure, I don't see and hope carnival and NCL don't copy it. Oasis I can see getting copied unfortunately.

What's in a name? A great ship is a great ship no matter what it's name is.

The names dont feel origional to me, or unique, and this wont be a size of ship we will ever take.

The Oasis will be a great beautifull ship that I plan to have the pleasure of sailing on.

If it was called the Carnation of the Seas or what ever it would be the same vessel

I agree with both of you. 1. When you have done enough miles on a silver eagle touring bus, even the cabins in the Sovereign class are "plenty big". 2. On the other hand, I have had both a balcony and a promenade on Navigator of the seas, and neither was as large as the standard cabins on Holiday and Fantasy class ships [120, 160, and 180 respectively]. But it makes no difference to me, because if I am capable of that much movement, I won't be in the room.
After all, RCI's slogan [before "Why not?"] was "Get out there!".

Oops, I blew it. The 120 square foot room was on Sovereign of the Seas. Our balcony room on Navigator was 206, of which 42 was balcony, so I guess it was about the same size as the promenade cabin.

I don't know why, but these huge ships just don't seem that big to me, there are so many small places to explore and I've never felt crowded on them, that totally suprised me...I think there are so many places onboard, not everyone is in the same place at the same time....

Donna you are abslolutely right. I felt much more crowded om the Carnival Sensation or the Celebrity Mercury than I did on the Oasis of the Seas.

My first cruise was on Navigator of the Seas, and I kept forgetting where I was. After the "Karaoke Idol" final, I sat around talking to the other contestants for a while, then went back out onto the ice stage and saw all the empty seats. My first thought was that all my friends had left and I had no ride home. I had a great time, but I still think of my cruise on Holiday seven months later as my first ocean voyage.

I had a long ocean voyage on USS Weigel. We spent most of our time looking out at the ocean for 23 days.

I had a super cruise on the Oasis. And yes you can see the ocean we attend a concert where we could enjoy the performers and see the ocean at the same time. There are great pools. You can also do mini golf and have the ocean in your site.
So the ship may be big but it does have a lot to offer.
