Default Saving Money So That You Can Cruise

With gas and airline travel so expensive, there ought to be ways in which people can save money in other ways. Some might include:

1. Don't buy bottled water. Drink tap water and use a refillable bottle.

2. Turn off your furnace or air conditioner durning times when there is no one in the house.

3. Mow your lawn less often, and it will require less water.

4. Go to the movies less often and don't buy all the expensive snacks when you do. The same thing applies to concerts and athletic events.

5. Take lunches to work and buy less fast food.

6. Don't buy alcoholic drinks or cut down on them when you go out to dinner. Actually drinking water (not bottled) rather than other beverages is cheaper and healthier with every meal.

7. Don't go to Starbucks for coffee.

8. STOP SMOKING. Cigaretts cost even more than gasoline.

9. This is for Trip. Buy one less pair of shoes every month.

10. Use public transportation or carpool if possible.

Perhaps if we do some of these things and save money other ways, we will still be able to cruise and splurge a bit.

Live and let live and you will live longer!!!!!

AirTran has raised the price of beer to $6 on the plane. Yesterday I made it all the way from San Diego to Atlanta drinking their free Sprite.

Default Saving Money So That You Can Cruise

I propose:

1. Instead of buying a book, go to the library. (although it takes gas)
2. Instead of gambling, play video poker (Tutorial)
3. Go for a walk.
4. Eat at home.
5. Window shop (although it takes gas)
6. And I can't believe you didn't suggest this one: Go on Chat!!

I don't want to change any of my good or bad habits in order to save money. I think I'll take up gambling and win the extra moola . If all else fails I guess I can put in a couple extra hours at the grindstone. I don't generaly like to buy generic products but will start. MD

Don't forget consignment shops for great clothes, gently used, stylish and CHEAP! Even in our little town, there are 4 or 5 great shops for clothes - especially cruise wear - sparkly things right after the Holidays, sandals, great skirts and tops.

I'm addicted to consignment shops and buy lots of things there. The savings pays for dry-cleaning and makes a great wardrobe booster!

I buy the vegitables and fruit at the corner farm market. Instead of the more expensive big name grocery store.
they package it and charge more.
also, driving less. Only paid $60.00 for gas last month.

One thing I forgot in my initial posting. If you pay by the minute on your cell phone, then talk less. Save the conversations for the cruise.

I have found out with sales that timing is everything; I always wait until the end of each season to stock up on clothing and shoes. Then too their are businesses on line that cater to the secondary market in clothing and shoes. Who cares if the style is last season; the discount price more than make up for that! Trip; you and I must be related to Imelda Marcos.

I suggest combining several trips into one...especially one that qualifies for mileage reimbursement from your employer!

We have had to make a few adjustments - we used to get take out almost every Friday - in the last three months we have only eaten out once I think - and that was when the local snackbar opened for the summer - I have had a couple of lunches out with friends - but they have been few and far between.

I clip lots of coupons.
I am shopping my closet and my pantry - putting together outfits from what I have and recipes the same way also.

I have a master shopping list - so when I do go shopping I am not as easily swayed by impulse purchases - I have things that I know my wardrobe needs - like a white blouse or brown socks...basic staples that have to be replaced, then things I need to buy for other people - like upcoming birthdays and such. So I shop with purpose I guess.

I am more aware of turning off lights, tv's - etc, not letting water run uncessesarily.

Trying not to take extra trips - in other words, being more organized. When I go to work, I am near the grocery stores. So I make sure I have my canvas bags, coupons and list in the car. When I go to the bank I check to see if I need and stamps or things mailed, as it is near the Post Office.

All very small things, that probably won't make much of a difference, but at least I feel like I am consuming less and wasting less.

Now, if I could only somehow conquer my magazine addiction

I stay around home on my free time, take advantage of the pool here for recreation rather than go out somewhere. I take advantage of every "freebie" I find that I can use. I shop with coupons for everything. I keep careful track of reimbursible miles for my job. When I am on a job that does not provide a meal I bring lunch from home.

Already doing this

Don't ever use the heater, just turned on AC at the end of May keep it at 80%

3. Mow your lawn less often, and it will require less water.

Once a month whether it needs it or not, I have a well for sprinklers but wait for it to rain mostly.

4. Go to the movies less often and don't buy all the expensive snacks when you do. The same thing applies to concerts and athletic events.

Haven't been to the movies in years, huge ripoff!

5. Take lunches to work and buy less fast food.

Can of Tuna and some apples today.

6. Don't buy alcoholic drinks or cut down on them when you go out to dinner. Actually drinking water (not bottled) rather than other beverages is cheaper and healthier with every meal.

I will NOT give up my booze!! Just go at Happy Hour, drink draft beer and drink at home.

7. Don't go to Starbucks for coffee.

NEVER!! Free coffee at work and make a pot at home in the morning for pennies.

8. STOP SMOKING. Cigaretts cost even more than gasoline.

Not yet! need cigs with my booze!

Nah

Put your pocket change in a jar. It adds up quickly. Mine has paid for my tips on board.

Buy mix and match clothes reuires less packing and you can change back and forth.

I consider myself fortunate to have a job where I work at home - so every time the price at the pumps goes up, I tell myself I got a raise... okay, I don't really have more money, but at least I don't have less! Unfortunately not much in the way of public transportation where I live (Mich. UP), and can't really leave the furnace off when it's really really cold out; don't have AC so can't save anything there. Agree with DTW - save money, drink at home!!

We throw our change in a jar. From cruise to cruise we have around $1200. That's our spending money for the trip.

It didn't hurt that I won $1500 in the lottery last night.

PLUS - We paid our mortgage off in March, but we're fixing up a few things around the house before our next cruise.

I like all of your ideas, especially the using less water, electricity, going out. Now if we could figure out how to get the teen kids out of the house, we could do that.

I propose:

1. Cut the cable
2. Cut the cell phone
3. Cut the high speed Internet

That's 1-2 free cruises a year.

Just be true to the period as we relive the best of the '70's.

1. Use only 40 watt light bulbs. You still have enough light but they take less energy.

2. Make one large stew or casserole on Monday and eat it for the rest of the week.

3. Ride bicycle or walk instead of driving.

4. No cable or movies.

5. Set water heater on low setting. You only need luke warm water.

6. Use only a 6 cu/ft refrigerator freezer.

7. Only go out once each week and then split a pitcher of beer.

8. Each month, host a keg party and charge $2 per cup. You can make up to $100 this way.

9. Sell home and live in 400 sq. ft. studio apartment in bad part of town. Cheap and no property taxes.

10. In winter set thermostat on 55 and let the heat from the other apartments heat yours.

11. Cook on propane camp stove. Less gas or electric bill.

This worked great when I was in college. Maybe going "back to the future" will let me take five cruises a year. I know I would appreciate them even more.

Take care,
Mike

Mike,

That was so funny. I took you sooo seriously until the sale of beer out of the keg.

I love your sense of humor.

How about one better - flip your upside down house and squat in a bank OREO. Relive Texas in the late '80's when unsold listings in San Antonio alone were the thickness of a an urban telephone book.

In reply to Dave the Wave's remark - " does anyone need more than 5 prs of shoes"

it's all in the wording - NEED - NO WANT - YES

All I NEED is - 1 black, 1 brown, 1 white and 2 pr sandels.

All I WANT is - something to go with every outfit I have!!! And that won't happen unfortunately!!
