Default Oasis of the seas: What do you think?

I just read the article on the home page about RCL Oasis of the seas. I was wondering what you guys thought.
http://www.cruisemates.com/articles/...iew-061908.cfm
Do you think the RCL is overreaching and can put themselves in finanical trouble? Do you think the ship is to big?

It looks like RCL is targeting families. I think a lot of the ideas are interesting. I love the idea of having inside rooms that have a window. This ship will have AquaTheater suites which have private views of all the action at the AquaTheater. Also Aqua theme shows seem like an interesting idea. Quick someone call Esther Williams.

To darn big. More like an island than a ship. We were on the Emerald Princess last October and I felt that was to big. I like ships that are about Panama Canal size. Mike

The video draws you in...I like this concept better than the Carnival video of a few weeks back, although it sets a totally different tone, than cruising now, like a floating resort, on steroids... I would have to say, although getting to and from Fll, with so many people, could drive me crazy, if the time and price were right. I would go for it. It might be just that once, but I would sail her..

One, it is way too big. Think 7,000 people (pax and crew). There is not one thing on that ship that you cannot find on land. Why go to sea when you can do all that is there on land? There should be something different about going to sea on a cruise. Well, I hope all the families flock to the giant ships and leave the "smaller", more traditional ships to those of us who actually like feeling like we are at sea.

It's almost a ship that I would be more interested in touring while it is docked rather than sailing. There is just too much to do to really get your money's worth out of it on a seven day or so cruise in my opinion. It MIGHT be ok for a ten day or longer sailing. With a ship that big and with all those features, why even have any ports of call ?...Most excursions and places to see are going to pale in comparison to just the ship itself. Long story short, I think the whole thing is amazing but gets a little "busy" for my taste. However, I think I would be more tempted to try it if I was fortunate enough to be a twice a year or more cruiser like some on here.

I agree with whoever else that stated it is probably quite a financial risk during these worldwide economic tough times....I doubt this is the kind of ship that they can afford to send out half or even three quarters full during these tougher times. I don't think we're going to see many $ 299 pp specials on this baby...But I guess I could ask the onboard psychic lol....Are ya kiddin' me with that RCCL?

About 5000 people too BIG. No thanks, I'll stick to the smaller, more intimate ships where I can see some of the other passengers more than once during a seven day cruise.

That is something else that interests me about the ship. How will building this ship impact the costs of all other RCL cruises? Also is RCL trying to compete with Carnival with this ship or with Disney? I thought the family type cruises were a Disney thing?

I like to play the stock market and seeing a ship like this makes me wonder who is it intended for? The baby boomers are getting older many are retired or nearing retirement age. However, this ship doesn't seem to be targeted to them. So is RCL's plan a good one or a risk that will never pay off? With high gas prices, how does the effect sailing a ship this big? Maybe they will built it, discover they can't sail it, and allow tours. It kind of makes me think of the Spruce Goose. Will the Oasis of the seas but the spruce goose of the seas only time will tell.

You're right Kat. I don't quite see what the draw is here, for the most part, for retirement age folks. I love older folks and they are some of my favorite people to meet on a ship or anywhere else. But I think the size alone may turn some of them off. Many of them don't care to (or can't) walk great distances nor do they enjoy huge crowds that much. Also, with the weaker economy, you're going to have less people retiring for awhile.

I think if the economy gets any weaker they may have problems. During stronger times, it will probably be a hit for the most part...Still, not really my thing I don't think. The scary thing is you know there has to be tentative plans already quietly in the works to build something even bigger than this thing!

The draw to the Oasis OTS is the ship itself. I noticed only a couple of new ports...so far. It is an engineering marval and an amazing peice of machinery. I can hardly wait until September, that's when the booking frenzy starts. Yes, count me in. I'm there. 8)

I would for sure like to cruise on this ship...I'd actually like to see a Cruisemates group cruise on it, that would be tons of fun!

As I posted on the RCI board....

6000 passengers + over 2000 crew = NO Kuki.

I hate amusement parks

I disliked Mariner of the seas and I felt it was just too blame big.

I did enjoy haveing an atruim staterom with the window that faced the RP.
That is nothing new-the voyager class ships all have this.

Ihaven't crusied in RCI in almost 3 years andit is becaus eof the direction they are taking. I am just not interested in the megaships. I want the old traditionial cruise experience.

Bookings for the Oasis OTS will open in Sept. 08, I'm really interested to see what the lead pricing will be on her. I imagine RCI will have to create a lot of new cabin catagories for the Oasis and Allure OTS.

What can I add? Ditto. I could do a five-day cruise to nowhere on a ship like that and really enjoy it. Once.

Hold on here!!

If everybody keeps signing up for the Zodiac, we'll wind up having to charter the freakin' Oasis of the Seas to accommodate the overflow!

Kuki cancelled his Zodiac reservation when he saw Kat's photos and realized there's no casino.

So there's room for one more. BUT THAT'S IT!

Just throw out a rope and an inner tube and pull me behind the Zodiac.

I've never been a fan of large ships and these would only be something I would cruise on if a little girl or boy looked at me and said "Grandpa, I want to go on that ship."

Take care,
Mike
