I saw him at a concert some years ago here in Florida. It was just George, a three legged stool, and several beers. He kept us rolling on the floor laughing for a solid two hours. Rest in Peace, George. You are the best.
What makes it especially sad is that he had already been slated to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor here at the Kennedy Center. I can't think of a more deserving person, and now it will have to be given postumously. Well, at least he knew he had won it.
I know that most of you don't care for The New York Times, yet they do have some of the finest reporting around, and if you care about George Carlin, you will want to read their wonderful, in-depth piece about him that is online on their front page now (Mon am). It is this kind of superb reporting, matched by no other newspaper, that has made the Times my permanent home page.
I worked for a telecommunications company and had the pleasure of speaking with George Carlin to install some lines for him. He was just as witty and funny on the phone. I spoke with him several times in the course of taking care of this for him. As we were chatting I mentioned my husband and I were going to be in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks and he said we would be there during one of his shows and wanted to give me 2 passes to his show to thank me for all of the hard work I had done for him (this was his personal lines at his home, not a business line). I explained I wasn't able to accept gratuities and he said, well what if they just appeared on your bed at your hotel.....I thanked him but explained this was my job and it had been my pleasure to work with him...from that time on, whenever he needed something he would always call and ask for me....and wouldn't let anyone else help him.....I have since retired and I hope whoever worked with him enjoyed his sense of humor as much as I did!!
I Was also shocked to hear of George Carlin's death. I saw him twice in concert. In the 70's in Providence and then in 2004 in Clearwater Florida. He had a way of pointing things out that was both funny and poinent. He will be greatly missed. Spacecowboy.
