Default Another Photoshop project

A pair of happy cruisers looking at you. It's Kuki and Geela in case you don't recognize them.

I didn't take the picture, someone posted the original here a while back. I used it to practice a Photoshop technique and decided to share.

I think it's a great shot of both of them.

Great work there. They are a wonderful couple.

Perhaps there is a photo of his parents you could do some magic with.

Nice photo job, Keith.
I remember taking a photo shop class on one of the Celebrity cruises. Too bad I forgot most of it. I have photoshop installed, but have never been able to figure most of it out. Glad you are having more success.

Phyll (and others too)--

I don't put much stock in the Photoshop classes they give on ships, mainly because there just isn't enough time to really get into the subject matter. I recommend classes that are given in most communities--I took a 12-hour course at our county's adult ed school several years ago. It was very, very valuable.

A lot of people think of Photoshop as a way to play tricks with photos along the lines of what Keith did, and of course it's very good at that. But I'll tell you something: I never, and I mean NEVER, print or post any photo that I haven't Photoshopped first. I rarely manipulate the image (although that's fun to do sometimes. Most of the time it's density and color correction, cropping and sizing. These "little things" usually make all the difference in the quality of a photo. Sizing is extremely important. Most people make 4/6 prints, which is a 2x3 aspect ratio. But digital cameras don't shoot their files in that ratio, so there are always decisions to be made--decisions I do not care to have made by the machine that prints the pictures.

So I create a new blank file in the size I want to print for every photo. Then I drag the picture into that file and crop it, rotate it as necessary, and correct for density and color. Then when I take the finished files to be printed (around here Costco is superb for quality and price), I tell them to turn off all automatic correction controls in their system and print the files as submitted.

If you do this you will get EXACTLY the cropping you want, and you'll find that you've instantly become a 50% better photographer. No joke.

Sure, it's fun to manipulate images with Photoshop, but I think it's far more valuable as a day-to-day tool to do the stuff that nobody will ever specifically notice, but that will make your photos far better than what comes out of the camera.

I'm absolutely grossed out when I see people at the photo counter handing their SD chip to the clerk. They always say the same thing:

"I've run out of space on the card, so I guess it's time to print them."

"You want to print everything that's on here."

"Well, yeah, I guess."

Unreal. You just want to say, "Nooooo. . ." But it's their pictures and their money.

To each his own.

By way of example of what I was talking about, several of you commented on this photo when I posted it as part of my France Chronicles series a few weeks ago.

I think it's fun too. But since I had to grab the camera and shoot fast when I saw Fea at the window, I didn't get a chance to frame up the shot. Here's the original file before it was Photoshopped. It's a good example of what can be done quickly and routinely to turn a mediocre shot into a nice photograph.

The original file was resized to make a 4x6 print, cropped, rotated to straighten the window stiles. The color and density were corrected. The dog was brightened, and the red window pane was brightened disproportionately in order to give continuity to the dog's body. Finally, various brackets, etc., were removed from the balcony outside just to reduce clutter and center our attention on Fia. Doing all of this probably took me about five minutes. Just doing a crop and an overall density and color fix (which is all I do for most photos) takes between one and two minutes of work.
