Default Couples On The Dance Floor On A Cruise !!!

I always marvel at the Captain's party there is usually a big band playing music from the 30's-50's era and a few older couples seem to really enjoy dancing to the music..but there are just a few..not many and hardly any young (under 40) couples

With DWTS having a required segment for music and dance routines of that era, hopefully young folks will embrace the music and dances of that Big Band Era

I have notice an increase number of theme cruises featuring Big Band era music and they seem to be pretty popular and I hope it continues..The Count Basie Orchestra just recorded a CD with Tony Bennett (who at age 82 looks and sounds great) that will be released in the fall

Great Music is Great Music regardless of era..I believe the term "evergreen" would apply to this ear of music and dances

I always have strutted on the dance floor with my companion during the Captain's parties. I do admit, however, to be in my 50's now but I was also in my 40's when I started to do this.

I love to dance a bit to the great "Big Band" music of the 40's and 50's, but much to my chagrin, the lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) does not. I even got us enrolled in a dance class at one point in our marriage, but even that didn't get her fired up on dancing. Occasionally I'm fortunate enough to find someone aboard who will "cut a rug" with me, and Vita doesn't object, so I do get to dance once inn a while. HMMMM "Once in a While" Wouldn't that make a great song?

Venice--

You err in equating enjoying the music with dancing to it. I love the Great American Songbook, I know a good deal about it, but I've never been much for dancing. If it is well played and well sung (a crapshoot on most cruises), I'm the best audience there is. Just because I'm not dancing does not mean I don't like it.

Give me a Barbara Cook or a Stacey Kent or a Billy Taylor or a Michael Buble or yes, a Tony Bennett in cabaret and put a martini in front of me, and I'm a very happy guy. Give me Basie or Brian Setzer and I'm just as happy, except I might switch to bourbon.

That new Bennett album should be fun. My God, the first time I heard him sing live was in the NBC studios in Chicago in the mid-60's. I've been very fortunate. . .I've heard him several times since; I've heard Ella, I've heard Rosie, I've heard Sinatra and Sarah V. I've heard the Basie band twice. . .with Basie. Barbara Cook, of course, and so many others. On Saturday we got to hear two current Broadway stars in cabaret at our wonderful Signature Theatre. Emily Skinner, who's recently been featured in Side Show, Jekyll & Hyde, The Full Monty and Dinner at Eight on Broadway, and who does most of her cabaret work at Feinstein's in New York, did an amazing set. And so did Julia Nixon, one of the original Broadway Dreamgirls.

As I said, we've been very fortunate to knock back a toddy here and there and listen to the very best. But as the song goes. . .

I can't dance, don't ask me. . .

Like Vita, I don't dance (so don't ask me). Keith probably would dance with somebody, though.

Amongst others, Keith and I have been fortunate enough to see Ella, Tony, Frank, The Beach Boys, and Charlie Bryd (betcha don't know who he is!) in person. We saw Sinbad, too, but he doesn't sing. I'll be watching for Tony Bennet's new album, for sure!

Oh, heck, forgot about Charlie Byrd. Really good guitar man 60's and 70's. Did mostly jazz but could do classical too. Studied under Segovia. Had a club here in the DC suburbs. Familiarity breeds contempt, I guess. It used to be a cheap night out to run over and see Charlie.

Same was true with the political comedian Mark Russell in those days. He did two or three shows a night in the lounge at the Shoreham Hotel. No cover, no minimum. We'd stop in after an evening out for a nightcap and his late show. He was especially hysterical during Watergate. He'd walk out on stage with the Watergate transcripts under his arm, open the book and say, "Tonight's reading. . ." Russell was very, very funny in his prime and it cost next to nothing to go see him.

I enjoy both the great big band music and the style and the enjoyment of the couples that dance to that type of music...there is a connection in both their relationship to the music and each other...younger couples on a cruise ship don't dance like that...My mom, who was a dancer and singer in the late 30's & early 40's at the famed Cotton Club in New York use to make me dance with her to the big band music, which at that time I hated and now I realize how much she enjoyed it so I make a point of asking a "young lady" (since so many of our senior citizens on a cruise are widowed) for the pleasure of a dance at the Captain's party

guess I am auditioning for one of those 'male consorts I mean dance partners like Jack Lemmon and Walter Matheau in one of my alltime favorite movies Out To Sea

AR lots of folks on the ship love the big band music but not ahold lot of them can dance to it

Well, there is also a Charlie Bryd,,,who coincidentally also plays guitar. I think maybe that's who Judy is talkin' about.....?????

Norm.

Norm I say one has to have at least alittle bit of rhythm to dance. One with two left feet and no rhythm might be hopeless even with Arthur Murray's help.

I love big band music, grew up in the 50 and 60's but always loved the band with the horns and drums. Count Basie went to my high school in Red Band, NJ, he brought his band back to the school in the 60's and performed a free concert. It was wonderful. Also had an opportunity to meet Frank Sinatra twice. My all time fav was Buddy Rich. Saw him perform four times; there will be no one who will ever match him.

Cheers,

So maybe I do need lessons in Big Band Dance!

I'm sure CC and I can teach you the 70's Freak!
Waltz is ok but not upbeat enough for me.

Ok Venice here you go the Merengue an easy one two step with some turns and spins with sexy hip action! Easy stuff and so much fun!!!
I love the song too! 8)

CC I have a feeling you can dance to the 70's stuff.

Anyone with rhythm can pick up on any dance style.

Venice I'll bring the movie camera just have to get someone to video tape it. I always did want to be a youtube star just like DTW!
