Default Widow living on cruise ship

http://www.gadling.com/2008/08/20/li...089x1200444108

This is pretty cool. A widow has lived 9 YEARS on the QE2 as opposed to going into a retirement home. I wanna do that!!!!

That's the way to do it! With real estate taxes in Jersey being the highest it could be cheaper just to live on a ship!

Me too!

Actually there are many retired people/couples that do this. And why not? Plenty to do, ways to exercise, lots of interaction. Great for elderly to stay active as long as possible, and probably longer than any retirement home would allow.

In my nursing research class my friend and I were going to do our project on something similar to this but couldn't get it nailed down to one specific thing. But we read lots of articles where this was many people's way of life

If you think about it no housework and no cooking everything is done for you.

The news is spreading fast..Today, I got this email from 2 cruising pals!

I wonder if this is the same woman, who's husband passed away on this ship..She decided to live onboard shortly thereafter...

That actually was my dream. I would have earned 12,000+ each month had I remained with the sheriff's office based upon my contribution of 360,000 into my retirement account, 7% guaranteed interest annually, and the matching of my contributions of 225% by the County when I retired. Divided by my expected life span and I was set!

Now, I can only dream...

I think a number of people have done this. It is terrific and a wonderful lifestyle until you need serious medical oversight. At that point, the party's over.

Seems to me the danger would be in cutting off ties to the landlocked world. If a medical issue were to develop, and if there were no longer any roots, it could be difficult. I would hope that people who do it have family to get them resettled if necessary.

Beyond that, I think it's great as long as you're fine with food, and as long as you don't mind the same band playing the same songs year after year.

She's paying $7,000 a month or $84,000 a year ... that's quite a bit of change! And AR is so right about the medical situation.

I would be on board for approximately 10 months out of the year. I would spend a month on one ship then go to another. That way, I would experience some change. Then I would stay on land a few weeks then back to sea.
