Default evacuating New Orleans!

I'm going to be out of touch for a while. I'm in training AGAIN and headed to New Orleans to evacuate the city...if needed. I WILL post later.

Let's pray that this "Training" doesn't have to be put into action! We're thinking of you and everyone else who's concerned about "Gustav!"

Good luck Melody. The people of New Orleans are certainly lucky to have folks such as you coming to help them out.

The evacuations of New Orleans began yesterday (Friday). There is mandatory evacuation of St. Bernard, Orleans, parts of Tangipahoa and St. Tammany parishes (draw a 70 mile circle around New Orleans). The State is shipping people to shelters in northern Louisiana and several surrounding states. The mass State run evacuations will end tomorrow (Sunday) Melody will be back home sometime tomorrow, with the contraflow being implemted at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, she will probably not be back to Baton Rouge until at least 5 p.m. She wanted y'all to know she is fine and that all is well.

I will be on 12 hour shifts at the EOC (Emergency Operations Center) until well after the hurricane is over and shelters have been closed. (oh what fun it is to be a State employee) Hopefully we will still have a cruise terminal after this, because I really really really can't wait for my cruise vacation

Hey All!

I'm back....haven't slept since Friday.....I am exhausted. I will post after a nap. I will tell you this.......everyone who wanted to be evacuated has been evacuated. The rest are idiots who will be crying and shouting that the "government" forgot them. We didn't. They were too drunk or stupid to show up. I did see National Guard members heaving the drunks onto buses for trips to evacuation centers. The Quarter was deserted last night. We stayed at the Astor Crown Plaza. They treated us like HONORABLE guests. We have had our first MRE meals in the field. HOT SWEATY tents at the Yenni Building. I'm just glad it's over and we got them all out.

I am now home. The pool furniture is sitting at the bottom of the pool. My "new" family is taking care of everything. I have a nice Italian Cajun lady who is cooking everything she can find. Generators and one window a/c unit is standing by for the onslaught of GUSTAV. We will have our share of extremely harsh weather.

My cell phone number is 225-803-5154. If one of you wants to call to check that would be fine and then you can post for me when our power goes.

It's NAPTIME!

Melody

PS VENICE WHERE ARE YOU!!!!!!! Please Please call me ASAP

Good luck Melody; I am glad to hear that they have planned better this time to evacuate New Orleans. It's so sad that it took the tragedy of Katrina to get our public officials moving. It is my hope that New Orleans rebuilds to its wonderful self again!

Very happy to see you back and safe Mel.

BTW, if the phone lines are busy or orverwhelmed you may be able to get text messages out. I've heard they require less signal etc.

I am sure there will be those who stayed behind and later regret the decision when the s**t hits the fan there. They will of course blame anyone but themselves.

Also glad to know Venice is safe.

What about TC ?

This storm may give us more places to lend a hand during BLOG2NOLA.

They are in the process of cancelling Jim's training in LA this week, and instead send them to the area for help afterwards. We are just waiting for the word.

To all of you in the track of Gustav, your are in our thoughts and prayers. I am sure many of you have had a tiring last few days securing your homes and then evacuating. Hopefully, everyone is now in a safe location and can get some much needed rest.

Melody, glad to see you made it safely back home. We have been watching the events in New Orleans on television, and it seemed the evacution was going well this time. I think I last heard that almost 2 million people have left Louisiana. I was suprised to see that one gentleman decided to stay in the lower 9th Ward area to ride out the storm. Appparently, his family had already evacuated. Who knows what he was thinking. We hope he stays safe.

You are all in our prayers. Good luck and stay safe.

Sherrie

Luanne, let me know when you come. TC is at the EOC...emergency operations center in her parish. She will be there til the storm is over. It's probably the safest place to be. I'm going to text her. Maybe she is getting some rest time.

It's raining here. It's supposed to get rough tonight and tomorrow. Tornados are popping up all over the place. We will probably lose power soon. I will post when I can.

Glad to know Venice is okay.

Melody, I'm glad to hear that you are home, and have done all that you can to help people get out of the way. Take care of yourself and your family now.

TC, thoughts and prayers are with you and all the others in the path of the storm too.

It looks like it won't be as bad as it could have been, but it still looks bad.

Take care everyone in the path of the storm.

Hey All!

Winds are picking up and we have PLENTY of food! All of Tommy's family are here from New Orleans and they LOVE to cook. We should be losing power soon.....very soon.

I haven't heard from TC but I'm sure she is fine. They put the EOC centers in the safest place possible and they have ALL the resources anyone would need. I think we will come out better after this storm than we did with Katrina. Say your prayers.

Remind me to tell you about Ms. McDonald...the elderly lady I evacuated.

I'm gonna go so others can send emails to their families. Phone service is intermittent. Text messaging works so far!

Just FYI to all here: It is now 3pm Houston time.

She and I are texting right now.....

Mel is experiencing a very bad time right now. The storm has apparently slammed BR pretty hard. Airport had 91mph wind at 230pm.

Her fence is gone and her roof is leaking.

All good thoughts to her and her family as well as everyone in the area of this storm.

She also says TC is ok.
