Probably a goodly amount of bandwagon fans and a good number of Red Sox ex-pats. The attendance figures speak for themself:

Tampa Bay -26 out of 30 teams -80 games 1,780,791 attendance 22,259 average attendance.

The four teams they beat out are Oakland, Pittsburgh, KC and Florida (in that order).

And Philly?

5th out of 30 teams -81 games 3,422,583 attendance 42,254 average attendance.

We averaged more than you had last nite over the entire season. If Tampa truly had a fan base they would have been more excited than the meager attendance over the course of the season would indicate.

Like their sister team in Miami, they lack a fan base due to the unusual nature of the population, expatriate fans who retain lifelong loyalties and those who develop attachments to the team that spring trains locally.

I am also concerned that, like when the Marlins won their first World Series, they will hold a fire sale in the off season to reduce costs having achieved the glory that the owners can brag about.

Good stats Doubg, but we have only be here 11 seasons. SO the only lifelong fan I know is my 11 year old son. It takes time to build a fan base other than the bandwagoners. We have not been around 100 years like some teams. You also make another good point in the nature of the population. There are many transplants here. I am a native Floridian and have been in ST Pete 25 years myslef from Orlando.

BTW, it is not Tampa, it is St Petersburg!

Being quite familiar with the area, I know that the stadium is in St Petersburg.

BTW the Marlins have the dead last attendance in the majors 80 games 1,335,075 total 16,688 average which reinforces my point that Florida based major league teams will never attract a true fan base. After all, the Marlins have been around 15 years, have two world series championships and have had strong teams unlike the Rays (until this season, of course).

Not a big baseball fan, not sure I understand the title of the post. Seems the Rays already dealt with a RedSox October

Will be interesting if the new darlings can keep Florida's post-season series streak alive or if the Phillies can bring a title back to Philly.

Having lived a year and a half in the Tampa area, I guess I have to be for the Rays.

Then again, it's been a long time for Philadelphia and the Devil Rays are so relatively new, so......

For what it's worth, every time I take a stance on a team heading into the Series, it usually means four and out .............. in favor of the opposing team.

Philadelphia teams have lost the big ones to the Tampa Bay Lightening (Hockey) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Football) - so why not baseball!

Tampa Bay Rays all the way!

"Red October" is how the the postseason is being termed up here in Philly.

Tonights the night! May the best team win! (of course we know who that is )

I just realized this yesterday. I don't watch hockey and I had forgotten about the Eagles. How ironic is that? Football, hockey and now baseball all three first time winners of Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup and now the World Series for Tampa Bay teams against Philadelphia. What are the odds of that?

How can it be a "World Series" when the world is not playing? Just the USA and parts of Canada.

If you take a sport with a real world following like Soccer (Futbol) you will see much better attendance numbers. 198 nations attempted to qualify for the 2006 Men's World Cup. The first 48 matches were watched by 2,484,439, producing an average attendance of 51,759. For the Final match Italy V France 69,000 attended and an estimated 715.1 million people watched it on TV. That's a real sport.

Soccer is for girls.... 8) Baseball is a mans game.

This is Coach Dave and the Crown Honda Blue Claws who quite ironically are a farm team for the Phillies who play in New Jersey. This was a kids day last year. We were already fans before we were famous.

and here is the Little Wave throwing another stike from the mound.

I have contacted my friends in the State Department and they are arranging your immediate deportation, preferably to someplace without any cruise ports.

You are right. It is the laziest of sports. Half the game is spent sitting and spitting in the dugout. The other half standing around scratching yourself and spitting in the field waiting for the ball maybe to come to you. Very little running, occassional contact and a lot of standing around. They have ten pitchers many of whom just hang out in the bullpen and BS waiting to maybe throw some balls. Not the constant movement of basketball, soccer or hockey.

Baseball and bowling are the only two "sports" you can actually gain weight while playing.

Doug it turns out your friends at the State Department love soccer and we were just chatting about the next World Cup so I don't think they are deporting me any time soon. Plus you would miss me if I was gone.

That is true. While many baseball players are in good shape, there are many with beer bellies and just look like regular guys. I think football and basketball players are the best athletes. Bowling is as much a sport as shooting pool. Golf is a drinking game and not really a sport either.

Very true Dave -- The Red Sox kept getting thwarted by NY teams and they broke that too.
