Default I flunked economics, and I just don't get it.

But seriously folks, I keep reading these reports of consumer spending drying up, but I am just not seeing it. Although I am sure if the banks are not lending money and people can't get home or auto loans that of course is going to affect the economy and drive those numbers down but I used to work in automotive advertising, I remember the day the first Persian Gulf war happened. It was like a free flowing spigot was suddenly turned off. You could have swung a dead cat and never hit a soul in a car dealership. This went on for months.

Last week I was at my local Toyota Dealer getting an oil change, and it blew my mind, they were busy! Lots of folks still looking for cars, and they were selling them. So obviously these folks didn't get the memo that we are in a recession. It seems as though this economic situation is targeting specific segments of the market in a devastating way and not affecting others nearly as much. It is strange, I have never seen anything like it. I know it must be terrible because it's all I read about on the news. My very favorite news story was from yesterday's paper. It talked about a woman who to a foreclosure auction, to buy her son a home. She saw the former owner at the auction crying because she was losing her home. The lady bid on the home and won it, and then offerred to allow the lady to live in her home again and make payments over time until it was paid off. Which I thought showed the very best of human kindness.

Now that BeenieWeenie is a story to treasure! Isn't it marvelous there are still people out there that are that caring and generous....far more I'd bet than we will ever learn about and could ever imagine.

Lst Saturday at our big Howl-W-Ween festival which I've always considered more of a "friend raiser" than a "fund raiser" made me want to agree with you. But after talking with some of the merchants here in town, I'm learning that sales are starting to decline. The auto dealerships around here seem to be pretty empty of customers when I occasionally drive through. The owner of one of the larger ones tells me that business is definitely down. If you don't mind a gas hog, one can pick up an SUV for a fraction of what the original sticker said. What cars are selling are of course, those good on mileage.

Although signs point otherwise, I still hope the Recession (which we are most definitely in) will not be as severe as predicted.

Yeah, I think it takes a little time for the pig to work its way through the python. There is a recession on, and I'm guessin' that we'll be seeing a lot of evidence in anemic Christmas sales. I know for sure that lots of retailers are not even bothering to hire the usual temporary Christmas help.

A period of deflation is actually a possibility.

There may be a silver lining: an article in the New York Times the other day pointed out that credit card companies are tightening standards, sending out fewer mailings that troll for new customers, lowering credit limits, and raising penalty interest rates. All this because they're now writing off between 5 and 6 per cent of all credit card sales for non-payment.

It may be that they will finally come to value those customers who use credit responsibly, instead of intentionally luring more and more marginal risks into their nets. A little-reported factor in today's economic woes is that there is currently 1 trillion dollars in financed credit card debt in the United States, considerably more than the cost of the controversial bailout plan that Congress passed.

The more people are taught to pay as they go, the better off the economy will be in the long run.

Beenie, you are truly blessed not to be going thru these trying times. Being reitred and on fixed income, my DH and I are sitting down and going over our spending list and seeing where we can cut back or cut out. Fortunately we haven't over spent, and hopefully the market won't go into a depression, but I see it all around us and it is very sad indeed. You are truly blessed. I also saw that news story and thought it was such a wonderful thing for that lady to do for them. Its nice to see we still have wonderfyl people like that in todays world.

I'm in the market for a 06/07 SUV and I've seen a 06 patfinder at a Toyota Dealer in Flemington (Hey Venice your old neighborhood ) The price was $17,999 last week the other day I looked at the dealers website and the same SUV was now priced $24,999.
The other day I stopped by another dealership and waited 15 minutes then left all the sales reps were busy with other customers and there was nobody to help me.

I think I'll have to fly to Florida and have Speedo King sell me a SUV. 8)

No, all areas of the country are seeing it. If your area didn't have a huge housing boom, then you are not experience the big housing drop. In fact there was an interesting article about areas where the housing market was stable. They didn't including California or Florida. In those areas we are seeing a lot of foreclosure signs. People got into loans they can't afford and the price of thier homes went way down (to normal levels). This meant they can't refinance out of the crazy loans they had. I'm in California and in an area like this, we see foreclosure signs every where.

I'm a black friday shoppers, it will be interesting to see what happens on that day. Black friday gives the early indicator of what will happen with the rest of the holiday sales. On the bright side gas is a lot cheaper. At the highest I paid $4.25 per gallon, yesterday I paid $2.75. This puts an additional $10 per week (give or take) right in my pocket. That is better for the economy the simulus (SP?)checks. Here is an article about oil. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/081031/oil_prices.html

Speedo King that is a very Funky Green color!!

But if a free cruise on the Minnow of the Seas is included then I won't mind a Funky SUV!!!

No other dealer is offering a free cruise with the purchase of a SUV!

You could incorporate it with your trip down here anyway for your Enchantment cruise. Fly down, drive home

How about something a little more stylish then

Katlady, you describe Southern California, as well. I think it's very sad. You really see how restaurants are suffering, too, except for a few exceptions, which always seem to be busy.

CQ..I miss Flemington...really really nice village with great people and beautiful green rolling hills

while my VW beetle was in the dealer getting fixed, I actually fell in love with the new "CC" and for under $30K, I might buy one, but VW is not throwing in a cruise on an exclusive yacht like our friend Dave The Wave

No, that is the CR-V's big brother, the Acura MDX with VTM, NAV and RES.

I'll keep looking I have until mid December to find something. Not looking today it will be too busy in the dealerships.

Have a great day all I'm off to my Zumba dance class.

Expensive to maintain and insure, premium fuel and the Cruise Queen doesn't need to impress her neighbors.

I love new cars as much as the next person...But God, they are a terrible investment...Really they are no investment at all because the vast majority depreciate in value and do so fairly rapidly. Yes, on the one hand it's nice to see people out shopping for them but on the other hand it's mostly people who really can't afford them at all. Most of the really nice stuff out there is being leased which is a nice way of saying rented. Most of us laugh at people who do rent to own furniture, computers etc for their homes but somehow leasing a vehicle isn't catagorized like that...I always wonder why not? I know, it's those ''terrific'' warranties that make it worth it lol...Give me a break.

If the avearage twenty or even thirty something out there would put that 5 year car payment into a Roth IRA for those 5 years, they would have hundreds of thousands of tax free dollars waiting on them when they turn 65! I wish I knew then what I know now lol.

yeah, fun. but why are we ballyhooing 2.50 gas, when not long ago it was 1.50 or less. my, how our values change, and we just eat it up. this is the strategy of big oil -- make them hurt at 4.50, then lower to 2.50, which is much higher than 1.50. and they will shout to the heavens how great it is. sick.

I think with this downturn in the economy, there will be a "tightning of the belt" along all economic levels. I have noticed that stores, in the Tidwater area of Virginia, where Rob and I live, are starting the holiday season with sales and specials a little bit earlier this year. Also, I have noticed a hugh rise in garage sales. People seem to now be unloading things that they really don't need. Americans are resilient, they have weathered downturns in the economy in the past and they will get though these difficult times. The good thing about difficult times is that if you have the cash, you can take advantage of some great liquidation sales.
