View Poll Results: Should this Puppy become the first dog?
Ever since president-elect Obama mentioned that his kids are getting a puppy, dog lovers around the world have been panting with anticipation to learn what kind of dog will become first pup. Obama is on the hunt for an allergy-free dog, since daughter Malia is allergic. Peru has suggested its native Peruvian hairless dog, a bald, toothless breed. Should this Puppy become the first dog?

In the spirit of a new beginning, a think a shelter dog would be the best choice for the new First Family. Give a wonderful dog (or two) a new beginning!

While I agree somewhat with Mehawk, if they are going to get a dog, it should a rescued dog and be an American breed or rescued from an American shelter. jmho
BTW - the picture of the dog in OP post, is absolutely cute.

Well, since one of the girls is allergic, the most important thing to keep in mind is that there are only a few types of dogs that can even be considered.
I think it is great they are getting a dog. I love dogs. I also think it is a decision that they need to make for themselves. They have a lot more to consider in dog than the average person.
Just let them get a dog, love it and enjoy it. While it would be great if they could get a shelter dog, it might just not be possible. If they can't then just let them be.
Love doesn't always where we plan it. When you find the right dog for you and your family you just know it. If it happens at the shelter great.
If it doesn't that is okay too. Do we insist that single people look for a mate at a homeless shelter? I know that is extreme.
I know it is like the one light-hearted thing decision that he may face as President - so I think we should just let them enjoy it as a family and not pressure them.
I am off my soap box now ... sorry to vent but I am sick to death of this whole political season -

Sorry, to me, "hairless and toothless" does not constitute a dog!
I think they should research the hypoallergenic breeds thoroughly, and if they can't find one of those at a shelter, then find a reputable breeder of that breed.
I wish them many years of enjoyment with their new pet!
Well, that's a very cute dog. No matter what they do, they hopefully will find a sweet dog. I have a scottish terrier who is just like President Bush's dog and they can be snappish. Love the dog, he does not like people very much. I once had a schnauzer; now that's a sweet dog. Whatever. I think they have alot on their plate. This is simply a pleasant diversion. Yes, we are all sick of politics. That's why this is a hot topic. Anything but politics.
I was looking into the dogs that are low on allegery causes and I think that the new breed of goldendoole or Labradoodle are so cute. My friend has gotten a Labradoodle and that dog is such a loving cuttley dog, although they aren't small in size, so I guess it depends on how big they want also. Of course all puppies are adorable just like all babies!
I am sure that there is atleast one dog in a shelter in this entire country that does meet their criteria! Then everyone in this country would be happy.
But who really cares where, how, and the fact that they are going to get a dog.
I saw some goldendooles at the dog park. Those are some cute dogs. They do have rescue groups for certain full breed dogs. How upset do you think people would be if he got an afghan hound? It's probably not an allergy-free dog and think of all the vacuuming.
He should get a Portuguese Water Dog (PWD) . They have that same type of fur a poodle has. Cão d'Água (water dog)The closest relative of the PWD is widely thought to be the Standard Poodle. Like Poodles and several other water dog breeds, PWDs are highly intelligent, have curly coats, and do not shed. However, unlike Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs are robustly built, with stout legs, and their tails are left naturally long and undocked. They have webbed toes, for swimming, which one can notice by trying to pass one's finger between the dog's toes. Their eyes are brown, and their coats can be black, reddish brown, white, or black and white.

I disagree. I think this dog, if imported from Peru, would fit in perfectly with B. Hussein Obama and his wife and kids. Obama is basically an import from Kenya. An expensive dog would go well with Michelle's $600 earrings and, toothless, he could still help her eat her $400+ lobster and caviar snacks!
