Key Card Lanyards?

Does anyone here have any ideas or solutions for this?

How hard is it to put your cruise card onto a lanyard that you attached to your belt or wear around your neck?

Does anyone ever do this on a regular basis? Do you have to make a hole in the card? or is that impractical for swiping, etc. Perhaps you have some kind of lanyard where the card slides in?

I am just wondering if anyone has a provedure they regularly do with their keycards to keep them safe and easily available?

I just go to the casino and get them to punch a hole in mine. They attach their curly cord thing which you can latch together. Oterwise, I'm going to slide my work ID out and put my sail and sign key into my retractable thing that clips to my belt buckle. They also have the lanyards we used during the evacuation of New Orleans for Gustave. The ID is in the front clear pocket and there is a velcro pocket behind it for money or credit cards. It's black and hangs around your neck. I'll have to see what they are called in the office supply book when I get back to work. This might work for shoppers.

Melody - as the Brits would say "Brilliant!"

They do that, I didn't realize it. And your card remains sweepable. That's cool. They actually give you the lanyard.

The kind that goes around your neck and the card slieds in is what we used for the Solstice cruise.

I carry something like this most of the time. You can find something like this in the luggage section at Walmart or Macys.

or something like this to take to the beach. It usually keeps room cards, ID, credit cards and cash dry.

We've been able to find either / both of these in most dive shops. Sometimes even in the gift shops onboard the ship.

I make beaded lanyard holders, but not for the he-man blogger cruisers:)

mteague January 1st, 2009 05:39 PM

Great idea Trip!

Oh and don't punch your own hole in your sail and sign card. The casino knows just the right spot to punch and keep the card active. I just left Office Depot they have several lanyard types including the ones I described.

Can't wait to see Trip's blinged out lanyard!

The Magnetic Name Tag holders we'll be giving everyone on the Blog2NOLA cruise are large enough, and hold firmly enough to also hold your sail & sign card.

Just have to watch that you put the card in backwards, so it doesn't demagnize the card.

Oh goodie I get to get one from Kuki --- thank you in advance LOL

I have had Cruise friends make me one---for our cruises together and since I try not to keep to much stuff from my cruises I do keep my sign and sail cards------ and thats about it-----

cheers

I had a job earlier in the year where I had to wear a lanyard all the time. I preferred the neck one because I always felt I had it on me. The other types are more likey to not be felt if they go astray.

The lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) carries her own little lanyard, and upon boarding just heads for the pursers desk and they always punch a hole in the "sign-n-sail" so she can attach it. No problem.....

Kuki, I am not sure about this but won,t the magnet take the coding off the sign and sail cards. I could be wrong but though it worth a comment. Mike

Yes, you're sort of right. Last time I used one I found if the card was put in with the strip facing the front, rather than the magnets, the card was unaffected.... but it may have just been luck.

Other times I've had sail and sign cards in the same card wallet as credit cards and they've been demagnatized.

If it gets demagnetized, don't do it again LOL

mehawk January 1st, 2009 07:59 PM

On the Cruisemates Thanksgiving Cruise on the Freedom, DW placed her sign and sail card next to her little magnized turkey light, in her purse, and the card was erased. So do be careful about magnets.

This is what we do every cruise. We still have the cards and lanyards from past cruises.

I will need a lanyard next time I cruise. On the last one I think I went thru 3 sign and sail cards...it was embarrassing.

TomS January 1st, 2009 11:13 PM

You can get good lanyards at most office supply stores or some fancy leather ones at specalty luggage stores. I am required to wear an ID badge where I work, and I have a lanyard that I can clip on to my shirt pocket.

Mrsrocster January 1st, 2009 11:14 PM

This may sound silly, but we bring our own hole puncher so we don't have to wait in line at the purser's desk and can go exploring. We know not to punch the hole on the magnetic stripe and you can still read the table number etc....on the front.

This is especially good for kids because many of them are used to having a lanyard for house keys and/or school id's so carrying their cruise card in it is 'normal' for them.

CruzNut January 2nd, 2009 01:51 AM

I've bought lanyards on Princess and Celebrity and the boutique shops will be glad to punch the cards for you ... even if you haven't bought a new lanyard.

Delft January 2nd, 2009 02:17 AM

NCL was punching the holes into the card as they gave them to you at a passengers request at sign n time. We brought our own lanyards, and simply attatched them right at sign in time.

We do this also...it is a great idea and when you return to your cabin and out the card down, you can find it very fast...

Love it! :D

We use the waterproof holder that we use for our fishing lic.
It's small and can be slid on our belt or used with the lanyard that is given in the casino.
You can buy the holder at any sporting goods store

You're welcome!

I just put my card in my pocket; never lost it or demagnetized it yet.

Wearing a lanyard would feel too much like work. :)

edited to add:

I do have a water wallet like this that I won at trivia on Sovereign of the Seas; it is great for snorkeling or beach excursions.

just don't take any old sail n sign cards from your last cruise; this can be very embarrassing    ; I was trying to get into my cabin; the darn thing wouldn't work; I went to the purser's desk and they said Honey, this is from your cruise on the Fascination; you are on the Inspiration... they had a good laugh at my expense

CruiseNOID January 5th, 2009 09:48 AM

Don't forget some employers may have lanyards that you can get for free rather than paying for one.

Where I work I got enough for our group when we went in August and passed them all out.

You are so kind to do that. We are thinking of a 2010 cruise on the Dream. That will be something I will look for.

My employer is my hubbie so I will have to look elsewhere.
What I mean is: He is retired and we are a stay at home couple....

ha ha ha ha...I do all the work and he does all the fixing of things
