Good Morning Cruisemates and all the ships at sea!
Early this afternoon in Daytona Beach, Florida, 43 unmuffled automobile engines of around 750 horsepower each, will power up and once again signal via their thunder, the commencement of yet another National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing or NASCAR, season.
For some it’s baseball, basketball, football or hockey. For this EastTennesseean, it has been for over 46 years, that “stand the hair up on the back of your neck” all encompassing deep chested thunderous roar accompanied by door handle to door handle, bumper to bumper racing in excess of 190 mph, that does it for me. One truly cannot ever appreciate the sport unless at one time in their life, they attend a Sprint Cup event.
Now wrapped in all the trappings and costs associated with among the most popular spectator sports in the United States, it seems only yesterday that a team, having trouble with their car on a Thursday prior to the Sunday race, went to a local Darlington automobile dealer, purchased a new Oldsmobile from stock and had it race ready by Sunday morning! It’s now been over two decades since the cars lost the remaining, most obvious vestiges of a true stock car. Nevertheless, I remain a NASCAR fan.
The menu this evening consists of Fran’s addicting potato soup, Chicken Cordon Bleu accompanied by oven roasted potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower florets, broccoli rabe and the obligatory southern yeast rolls. Dessert will be coconut cake.
