Default My VERY first Ambulance Ride!

Well, let me reassure all of you and disappoint a few......I'm fine!

However, this past Monday was a DIFFERENT STORY!

I've been taking a pill for my blood pressure for a year. Well this pill wasn't doing the job, so the doc added another pill a month ago. I was at work Monday, looking very cute in my white pants and blue top! I walked outside and was speaking with a co-worker. I told her I needed to sit down because I was very dizzy. I tried to make it to a bench, but fell in the process. After struggling to the bench (while two male workers looked on!), the handicapped person I was speaking with came to help me. She called for help. I wavered in and out of conciousness. Someone brought my purse and called my husband. The police arrived and called EMS. Fifteen minutes later (or so I'm told) the ambulance arrives ( and I work just steps from the capitol). The tech's couldn't get an IV line going. My veins had collapsed. My blood pressure was 50 over an unmeasurable number. After I arrived at the hospital, an IV was established and fluids were given. I revived a bit and was sent for a TON of tests, even though I kept insisting it was the BP meds.

HOURS later, they agree and called my primary care doctor. Seems there is a VERY RARE side effect for a few people. Their bodies do not fully process the second drug and it accumulates in the body. For all intents and purposes, I had an overdose of BP meds. I could have died.

I spent the next day bedridden and unable to lift a finger. I was better on Wednesday and returned to work Thursday. Everyone was concerned and glad to see me back. I'm much better now, but I choose not to repeat the experience.

Right now, I am on NO BP meds. The doctor has ordered me to monitor my BP and begin taking a half dose of the first med when the BP reaches 135/85. I'm not near that yet. I will have to see him again when I start the half tablet. The second med has been eliminated as a possible treatment for my blood pressure.

So far so good! I'm REALLY upset because I ripped a hole in the knees of my white pants!

BTW, I booked a cruise with Nancy for July 24, 2010 on the Triumph out of New Orleans. I have 50 cabins on hold. Interested parties can PM me.

Later!

Melody

Mel I'm so glad you are alright. That is scary stuff. It is a shame about the white pants to, but these can easily be replaced.

My friend ... You go girl! I know it will take more than a bad reaction to meds to get you down!
Remember what I said .... and do NOT over do anything! It's not worth it!

I'll check with you later this weekend.

Mel, I am glad you are better. Your story scared me as I recently started bp meds. I get dizzy sometimes from them. I might look at your cruise. It would give me a chance to get to New Orleans and possibly visit with my daughter. Now get out there like the super woman that you are and SHOP!! You have new white pants to buy!

Ambulance rides are never fun. I remember one in particular where I threw up from motion sickness because of being in the back, and the driver's wild driving!

Glad you are OK Melody, and there's a lesson there about medications.
Adverse reactions are always a possibility, and one should always wear a Medicalert bracelet for certain ones.

Hope you are recovering well, take care...

Yes, I see a few sales in the paper today.....I might be headed to the mall. Thanks to everyone for their care and concern. I am much better today. The medic alert bracelet might be something to check on. If I hadn't been able to occasionally speak they might not have known what I thought it could be. I'm going to check on that as well.

Laura, let me know if you decide to join us. I can PM you the rates and I can tell you this....Nancy has arranged for a $100.00 onboard credit for each cabin.

Default My Very First Ambulance Ride

I've had one abulance ride, too, and hope never to repeat it. Take it from a seasoned chemotherapy patient who tried a shopping excursion a week after chemo. It nearly killed me, so don't overdo!

Glad you're feeling better.

Wow Mel----
Really happy to hear that you are doing better---and also hope the bp will be under control soon--those darn meds can be tricky-----I didnt pass out but trying to get the right dose----? my went very low---and only finding that out when I went in for a recheck-------thank goodness it was the meds and not something else--
I seem to be one of those who seems to fall into the one in million ----gosh it only took 4 different doctors and a bunch of tests to find out what was wrong with me---

humm New Orleans in 2010 ????

cheers and take care
April

Melody,

Am so glad everything turned out fine. So many of us take so many medications (I being one as I take 20 spread out over the course of a day) that the chances of having some reaction whether it be directly with the pill or even with another medication you rare taking are well....often not slight.

My physician is additionally, a good personal friend. Nonetheless, even he suggests that no one take anything without first being familiarized by the pharmacist of any contraindications, etc. Choose your pharmacist with at least as much care as you choose your physician.

As has everyone before me, please take it very slowly for a few days.

Todd

Wow - scary stuff, both the medical side, and the trauma of ruining a great pair of pants! I agree - shop, shop, shop. It will ease the pain.

Glad you are on the rebound!

I am glad you are okay. I work for an ambulance service here and we are much quicker than that. Our avg for in city runs are about 5 mins and 15 in the county.

BTW; I have a very good friend that is a paramedic there in Baton Rouge. I know for a fact he is a good one too.

I am very happy that you are ok and getting better. You are too onery to get ill and have a long time to live dear one. I hope you took a nice, warm bath afterwards to ease the pain in the knee.

See ya 'round.
