I am calling on all you well traveled cruisers. I would like to know if any of you have stayed at any of the all inclusive resorts in the DR. How did you like it? Did any of you play the golf courses? and How did you find the local people? ANY information would be appreciated. We bought a package for an all inclusive for Punta Cana or Puerto Plata from our travel club and I was just doing my research work. Thank You again for any help.

Most are very nice. My Husband and I honeymooned at an Occidental Resort 12 years ago and had a great time. There are some great bargains to be had. Just check out the resorts you are considering at Tripadvisor and it should give you a pretty good idea of which resorts are the best and what to avoid.
When we were there we didn't meet any other Americans. At the time most tourists were European or Canadian.

Just do your homework and you'll be fine.

We love the Dominican Republic.. I prefer the La Romana area because of the warmer and calmer water. Dreams in Punta Cana is great as is Dreams in La Romana...Resorts come and go with name changes and upgrades.. so watch what your booking... go to Debbies Dominican to check out the reviews

Hi BigJohn, nice to see you!
I can't be specific, but I do know that a lot of our daycare families vacation in Punta Cana - there seems to be a family heading off there every week or so, so the deals must be good, and I've never heard anyone complain.
I don't know why the Dominican is so popular with Quebecers...
Hope you enjoy your trip!

donna

btw, how are the little ones doing?

How times change.....in the 80's, a boss of mine won a trip to DR...and she refused to go..seems unrest at the time, made her weary...now it's a booming tourist destination....

RollerD...The "chunkers" are doing great. Can you bleive they just celebrated their third BD last weekend. Growing like weeds. We have them in first step school and they are coming along very well. Some of the birth effects they had made them a little bit behind. Brooke is almost up to par but Blake is having a bit of trouble with his speech. Making great improvements though. We love them so much and can not get enough time with them. They are hilarious..

We spent a week at Bahia Principe in DR last October. We enjoyed our time there. A few thoughts... For some people the colour of the sand is a big deal, in Punta Cana it is white like many of the caribbean islands, in Puerto Plata it is dark like what we have here in Canada. The beaches are lovely on both sides and as far as we are concerned the colour of the sand doesn't matter. We ventured out and experienced some of the local flavor, people seem to be wondefully friendly but there is a lot of poverty. We had done our research and we had packed a suitcase of school supplies and candy, we asked our tour guide to take us to a couple of schools off the beaten path where we could drop off these items. They were very appreciative and we had a great experience. We continue to mail packages every few weeks to one of the teachers at one school that won over our hearts. While they did not bother my husband, I was bitten many times by sand fleas and would recommend that you pack Off! or some variation of it just to be on the safe side. We enjoyed DR be careful of currency exchanges made by locals, we came out on the losing end of that a few times, nothing major but it is a poor area and we are for the most part an oportunity. Hope this helps.

WOW, That was some good info 2 little...thanks. I have never thought about the school supply thing but that was so thoughtful of you. Gives me an idea and when we go, we will be packing some supplies. That is so great. You are so right about us being an oppurtunity. I realized that in some parts of Jamacia. They are also a poor country. Some places are so scary though. Thank You again for the info.

We were riding in an open back truck for one of our tours and the kids run behind asking for candy. The sight of their little faces lighting up as you throw it out to them is incredible. When we took crayons, pencil crayons and notebooks to the school the kids were so excited they were jumping all around. We had to laugh because when we were taking pictures, one of the kids us that they had not had their picture taken in a long time, we took all of their pictures, one at a time and then some group shots, when we returned home we printed them out, made a scrapbook of our visit as well as lots of individual copies and mailed them back. We received 62 letters in just over 3 months all expressing thanks and excitement, our 9 year old daughter was thrilled to share the letters with her class and they became penpals. It is amazing the positive impact we are capable of when we travel especially when we take the time to truly experience our destination. Well, that's becoming a novel, sorry. Have an awesome time.
