Default New Kids On The Block !!!

Carnival will be hosting another New Kids theme cruise next April on the Imagination again..there was such a huge demand for the first one, it crashed their reservation system...the group consisted of 900 screaming women and 300 silent men

the question is, which one musical group, would you pay a premium to see, on a 3 day theme weekend cruise

because our friend RD is busy with her beautiful new home, I will answer for her.. .BeeGees

my choice..... :o :o Stevie Wonder :o :o ....it would take 3 days for him to play all of his hits

Default Who Would I Pay to See?

Tina Turner! As she says in one of her songs, she's "Simply the Best".

Thanks for my vote Venice, but it would be impossible since Maurice Gibb has been gone for over 5 years now...

I would love to see a Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmastime cruise, wow that would be something, but the pyrotechnics alone would probably blow the cruise ship out of the water!

I think Blue Man Group will be a real draw for Norwegian Epic. I think that will be the first cruise show that actually convinces people to book one cruise over another. (I'm saying I don't think any cruise line stage show alone has ever been enough to encourage people to select any specific ship, but BMG on Epic will be the first).

As far as bands I would pay extra to see on a cruise ship?

Steely Dan. Beatlemania Live, Rolling Stones.

I never paid much attention to Steely Dan, until I met Larry Carlton on my smooth jazz cruise this year and he talked about when he played with them..I did not know they have a Jazz foundation and the two founding members met when they attended Bard College in the 60's...

Paul, I think you are right about the entertainment on the Epic

my co worker and i have wanted to go on both of the new kids cruises... but they sell out so fast and cost a lot. plus the reviews from the first one wasn't great, you didn't get to enjoy the cruise because you were always in line for something.

Bruce Springsteen
Reunited Moody Blues
Stones
Eagles

I think the per/diem would be much more than a Seabourn cruise.

Take care,
Mike

I am truly dating myself, but here's who I'd like:

Tony Bennet
Elton John
Simon AND Garfunkle
Johnny Mathis
Pretty much any of the Big Bands
Judy Collins
Willie Nelson
Bette Midler

Now if someone can get them together on, say, Constellation for a 10 day cruise, and be sure that Perry Grant was also there, life would be good.

Venice,

You are right, and I'm almost thinking in retrospect that I may have been thinking of specific songs rather than a specific artist per se. Each of those I listed has done stuff I really like. For example, Bette Midler's version of "The Rose" is what got her on my list.

It's quite obvious that there are few artists that are new, or modern if you will. I put that down to the fact that I don't listen to other than oldies stations, because I like that music. I don't think I could name a current popular group.

I also like show tunes, but couldn't think of a particular artist - Julie Andrews maybe, since Ethel Mermen is no longer with us.

Now I may just set the TV to one of the music channels cable provides, and mellow out into the rest of the evening.....

Sid..I suspect we are in the same age group and I know exactly what you mean when it comes to music.. fyi I am a huge fan of Tony Bennett and he plays often at a casino in Mississippi and he draws a crowd of all age groups , which tells you great musicians who span a long period of time will get discovered by the next generation

you should really look into a music theme cruise at some point..the promoters do a really good job in providing a wide range of artist and styles designed to attract the greatest audience possible, but they also include artist that you might not have heard of or think you won't like and with the very intimate setting of a cruise ship, you can discover their music...and they must know what they are doing because they sell out

my upcoming October Capital Jazz Cruise illustrates my point...we have classic jazz artists, Joe Sample Patti Austin& David Sanborn, 70's soul/jazz/funk group War, smooth jazz superstars Brian Culberton,Rick Braun, Najee, Candy Dulfer,Jonathan Butler, neo soul Kem (who reminds me of a young Al Jarreau) comics AJ Jamal and Jay Lamont and about 7 groups that I have never heard of, but looking forward to hearing them

I'm sure if we looked hard enough, we can find a theme cruise that reflects your musical taste..and if there is ever a PBS sponsored theme cruise with the great doo-wop acts of the 50's, the motown acts of the 60's or the disco acts of the 70's, you and i will be the first to purchase a cabin....i do draw the line at Julie Andrews

I'd want to hear the Beach Boys, Tony Bennett, or Barbra Streisand.

When I sailed on Carnival Spirit there was an entertainer that did a tribute to Sammy Davis and Frank Sinatra. He was just fabulous. Best show I have ever seen.I would love to see him booked again. I cannot remember his name but he was outstanding.

I would like to go on a cruise and see Neal McCoy. I have been a fan of his for years. Out of all the entertainers we have ever seen he is tops. My second choice would be Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney.

We can dream.

I would love to see all of the above. Is there still a Beach Boy? I thought they were all gone now.

Luanne, I worked at a concert venue in NH in 1990/1991 The Beach Boys performed there to a sold out house. We also did a concert with Brian Wilson to a sold out house. He was outstanding!

I took a stab at wanting to be a pro musician but I had bed stage frieght (I still deal with it as some of you know who have traveled with me - I have a hard time in front of crowds).

The per diems I think Mike mentioned. When you book a musical act they have a contract with something called a "rider" which lists all the stuff they want backstage.

Some of the requests are unbelievable - you name it, and they will throw a hissyfit if it isn't right.

I really don't know how these jazz cruise can make money with all of the free cabins they have to provide to the artists, tech crew, backup bands, etc. It is a LOT of work.

I am glad to see New Kids doing a second cruise, and I am actually surprised the first one went off well enough to warrant another stab at it.

Anyway, riders. The riders on peformance contracts:

This is 10-page rider for the Foo Fighters

Luanne,

Ol' Willie does like a toke now and again, doesn't he? I wonder how he would interpret an island song? Bet he would do a passable job. Who would have thought he could do a great version of "Stardust". Second only, IMHO, to Nat King Cole's definative vocal version.

Once long ago (1962) at a college campus far away (SUNY Potsdam), I worked a Clancy Brothers concert. When they went on break, one of them asked me to hold his guitar while he "saw a man about a horse."

My 5 minutes of fame......

I have a story too. Greg and Duane Allman's house was behind my grandmothers. When Greg met Cher, she and Greg got to know each other in his mothers back yard. My grandmother told us not to stare. She said "The Boys Practice a lot." We just smiled.

Willie Nelson lives about 30 miles from me.

Good to hear that a Beach Boy lives. They sure had a rough life.

Venice,

While the concert venue was at Potsdam, I was attending Clarkson in the same town. It was there I discovered that being an engineer was not it the cards - some subject called physics.....I ended up, and finally through, Union in Schenectady.....not as an engineer. My sister did go to Potsdam as did her husband. Back when I was at Clarkson and Union, they were not yet coed schools....but then the world was lit only by fire it seems.

SUNY is a great system and has a ton of good schools all across the state.

Oh, on a musical note, while at Union I did see a Kingston Trio concert...not exactly the Stones......
