Do Cruiselines Work Together ????

in the airline business, two carriers cannot coordinate their schedules without special dispensation from DOJ anti trust, to relieve congestion at an airport...it becomes much more of a reactive market

do the cruiselines work together to determine when it's ships call on a certain port / or does the host island determine that...I was just thinking about the OAS..when it's in port, it will cause all kinds of logistic challenges...if I were a competitor, I would want my ship to call on that island on another day when it is less congested

I'm sure Royal Caribbean adjust it's fleet schedule so that their private islands are not over crowded on one particular day

I don't know for a fact, but it seems to me that the ports do their own scheduling. I say this because I have seen instances where a ship arriving later than scheduled didn't have a place to dock.

On the more common runs with repeating schedules, ie: Oasis and common ports like St Thomas, the agreement is between the port and the cruise line. St Thomas had to undergo a six-month dredging process to accomodate Oasis.

Now that it is common knowledge Oasis will be there it is up to other cruise lines as to whether they also want to go there.

But I also have to say I think you blowing Oasis out of proportion. St Thomas regularly has four or five ships in port, many of them carrying over 3000 passengers. Oasis is equal to 1 1/2 ships, maybe two, in terms of what it carries. So, if you have five ships in St Thomas, or four, one of them being Oasis, there isn't much difference.

You make it sound like Oasis landing anywhere is going to creat chaos. In reality, the number of passenger visits to St Thomas will not be affected so much on a percentage basis by Oasis as much as other factors (like the overall growth in cruise ship capacity) will affect it.

Paul, once again you provided us with valuable information. This should clear up some of the issues about the Oasis and how the ports will handle all those passengers.

Paul..sounds like a good topic for an upcoming article from you :) :) I just figured there must be some type of system to prevent over saturation on any particular day

plus..even if it 1.5 X ship..the .5 probably would stay on the ship since more then likely they have visited the island more then once and are cruising because of the ship, not the island

I'm sorry, i misread your title, I thought you said "Do Cruisemates work together"?
In answer to that, Yes, they do! We all support each other whenever we need it!
