I'm with Mike...he does not appear to have $$$$ problems, he's accomplished everything in the game, why is he coming back ...the trick is to knowing when to walk away while you still can without injury
actually, it's kind of sad, but also a reflection of the win at all cost now mentality
I'll go with the first one. Being a Bears fan knowing that we have to go up against Favre twice during the year is always a worry. He seems to do well against the Bears, but as of late just about everybody does well against the Bears.

I agree with you. I think it's unfair to the other quarterback on the Vikings that were trying to get the starting position all the sudden Brett Favre appears and you are out of a job.
Steve Young dealt with this waiting from Joe Montana to realize he was to old for the sport. Montana got injuried so Young filled in. Instead of retiring once Montana healed he wanted his starting position back. Good for the coach for not giving it back. Montana ran whining all the way to Kansas City, just like Favre. First time Favre retired it was wonderful emotion end of an era. Now it's the punch line to a joke.

the genius of former 49'er coach Bill Walsh, is that he knew the right time to trade his fading superstars..Montana, Craig, Lott etc..he took alot of heat for it at the time, but it was the right decision for the team
little known story about Walsh...when he drafted Jerry Rice out of Mississippi Valley, Rice dropped alot of passes in preseason including a potential winning touchdown against the hated Cowboys...The press and public were demanding that Walsh cut him..Walsh said 'mark my words, he will be the greatest receiver in the history of the NFL"..he was right
Walsh would have told Brett, to pack it in and stay retired
I voted for the first option. This is ridiculous - old wishy-washy Brett has once again avoided training camp (who me?) and come back cuz his daughter asked him to. Oh, sure! And, another $12.5 million couldn't hurt.
The Vikings immediately sold lots of seats - whoopee for them ... hope they end in the cellar of the Central Division.

Anyway, this older fart says go for it! I'm keeping an eye on him - might have to scoop him up for a fantasy football league team.
Oh sure blame the wife, this is clearly a mid life crisis. A large part of his life is over and he can't accept it. I agree with Fran Tarkenton for the most part, except I still think Brett playing takes away a young player's chance at the NFL and the just bugs the heck out of me. Retire you old fart. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/s...=ESPNHeadlines

Sounds to me like you are just not a fan of Brett.
Zydecocruiser, I liked Brett Favre before he retired the first time. I respected his talent and I enjoyed watch him play. I watched his first farewell speech and thought it was wonderful, a legend goes into retirement.
He let the Green Bay Packers set up the new team with the new starting quarterback. Then he changed his mind about retirement and expected the Packer to redo the team for him. When the Packers won't do it he went to the Jets. That was just tacky.
Kenny Stabler isn't that the guy who got the DUIs in 1995 and 2001? Well let's see in Kenny Stabler final year with the Saints 1984, he was 39 years old at the time, the team's record was 7-9 and the team failed to qualify for the playoffs. I look forward to Brett Favre acheive a similar level of success in his final season.

Kat..in all fairness, the Saints were not that good during that time..but you can also use Joe Montana (with the Chiefs) or Joe Namath (LA Rams) or YA Title (49'ers) and OJ what's his name (49'ers) to illustrate your point
however, for a QB position 39 is not ancient
I think what upsets folks is not what he did, but the way he did it...there is a long trail of athletes who stayed in the spot light beyond their time
love him or hate him...Jim Brown (another Syracuse Orangemen) did it right..he and the Detroit Lion running back, Barry Sanders got out at the top of their game and without permanent injury
I can still see Favre sobbing during his first (or was it his second?) retirement announcement. I wouldn't say that he's a phoney ... but I'd certainly say that he has some serious decision-making problems! Is he too old? No way! [I'm 78] To me he's just a selfish self-centered ex-star who doesn't give a damn for anybody else but himself. How many lives is he screwing up by his now-I'm-retiring/now-I'm-returning charade? And still his fans cheer him on. SAD!! Btw, I voted with the "don't care anymore" folks.

The Packers defense is salivating.......they were never allowed to hit or touch Favre during practices...........they are already planning on hitting him hard when they play the Vikings this year!
BTW - I congratulate the Vikings in participating in the "Cash for Clunkers" program!

Sometimes people get addicted to the spotlight. Junkies, in a way.
Magic Johnson was the same way.
A lot of people just can't accept the idea of fading into the background when they've been stars all of their adult lives. And it's kinda sad when this happens, to see the great ones fall.
Venice is right -- the truly great ones get out with their minds and bodies intact!
Mine, for one. I bet a friend in Duluth a hundred bucks against Favre signing with the Vikings! More importantly, I think his machinations have shown a serious character flaw to the youngsters who have looked up to him as a role model (not to mention whoever it is that believed he was the guy who had earned the starting QB job for Minnesota.)
