Default Our Reputations

I have concerns about this new Reputation rating feature on the boards. I see the potential for more harm than good.

Among other things, it has the potential to become a popularity contest….

Let’s say a member expresses controversial points of view; let’s say a member’s posts upset some; let’s say a member’s views are unpopular.

This member may acquire a scarlet dot – a scarlet letter, if you will.

And we’ve had a few members get into trouble over the years – Captain Edward J. Smith’s meltdown a couple of years ago a prime example.

Scarlet dots on members posts who are already in trouble only add fuel to the fire. Others may pounce on a member with a bad Reputation. There have been some fiery exchanges, especially on the Gripes Board, over the years. Scarlet dots may invite even more fire.

Worse still, members may be inhibited from an exchange of ideas, for fear of earning a bad Reputation. It is far better to have them post away, and remove violations than to inhibit them from posting at all.

I’ve always thought the moderators have done an excellent job of managing the boards, removing posts that violate this site’s TOS as one of many mechanisms to available to keep order. Additionally, members can report posts to the moderators for review. What more need we?

The body of work of a site’s members speaks to the quality of its content. Our content is of particular quality.

We speak of our fears, and our hopes. We share of our lives, and our granddaughters. We pray for the well-being of ourselves and others. Our posts speak to those qualities truest and best in humanity.

If we are to be judged, let it be not by Reputation ratings, but by the content of our posts.

Actually I agree with this. I dont like the idea of rating peope especially as there is simply no need for this.

Does it actually show up somewhere if someone ticks it? I guess it doesn't matter too much to me, just because I've been here long enough to know who the real troublemakers are... Hey wait a minute, I resemble that remark,

Is this actually rating a post or the actual cruisemate?

You really don't know someone until you get to meet them in person and get to know what they are all about.

So being rated on any forum by someone that has never met you is kinda funny.

If it's rating a post well then we all have different views and personalities so not everyone will agree on the same posts.

Oh man does the new rating system mean I now have to behave

You are a bunch of weenies<---------rate that folks

Just kiddin' folks. I add my voice to those who do not care for this feature. I refuse to behave in any reasonably civilized fashion though.

Gee I have 10 reputation points. Does that win me a free cruise?

Due to the fact that my reputation is already in the toilet. I have disabled this feature on the boards. Within two days I had achieved a reputation of being "Easy" and "Loose Virtued". Wait......... I'm going back and turning it on.

Seriously:
This was a default option on the boards and we are still doing some tweaking.

I also agree that while it might be a good thing there is too much chance for abuse.

It's gone.

Take care,
Mike

Default reputation

As human nature will have it, there's always some who are more popular than others, both on and off this board--it's the real world
I'm glad to see there's no longer a " popularity " or reputation rating--
In 9 years, I'm sure I've ruffled some feathers, and had mine ruffled a few times--nothing personal --just human nature.
Many times people come across as harsh or too hard in writing when in fact if they were talking face to face with someone it wouldn't come across that way at all.
I don't purposely try be hard or sound harsh on some posters, but try to be honest and plain talking in my posts.
So if I've offended anyone over the years, let them send me on a free cruise to get my mind straighten out so I won't repeat the same mistake again-- any ship or cruise will do!!

A the famous Popeye the Sailor man says, " I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam "
Happy sailing to all.

Mike,
I am happy to see that rating feature gone.

I was wondering, can you work your magic and add a feature, that at the bottom of a page, we can click to go back to the main chit chat page? Right now we can only go previous o next, but some times, most times I dont want to do either, I want to go back to chit chat and fnd which post I want to read. ( Yes I confess, I do not read all the posts) I find it some how a pain in the butt to have to scroll back up to click on chit chat or the "back" button on the browser.

Any chance it can be made easier?

Delft:

We have requested a couple of things to make navigation easier, such as the links to the different categories at the top of all pages. Example: Cruise Lines, Practical Advice, People...

In the interim I just use the "Message Board" drop down, in the blue header, at the top of the page to move around the categories.

I will add a "request" to see if the "breadcrumbs" (The same thing as the top of the page) can be also placed at the bottom. Because of the nature of the boards it will need to be programmed.

In the interim hitting the "Home Key" on your keyboard will take you back to the top without scrolling.

Take care,
Mike

Hey Mike,
Yes, the tap with forum jump that is now located at the bottom of the posts, would sure be nice at the top, or something like it. The old boards had them all in a line and you could jump from one to the next....Good idea if it is possible to do.

Other cruise sites that use this software have wisely disabled this feauture. It serves NO purpose.

I noticed Trip was (is) your only friend under the Friends tab so could she be the one bestowing you with this rep?

We, too, agree with doing away with that feature.

Phil&Liz,

That's not true. Donna is my friend as well as Kuki and Paul. It was Kuki who gave me the reputation...

Take care,
Mike

Cool

Not a feature I would be likely to use.
Glad it is gone.

I am a member on a forum that uses the reputation and do not beleive it has been a problem. I myself have never used that feature.

And really don't think that it would be a problem here. I have never really seen a major problem between any members. Heated discussions yes but never anything horrible.

On the other site it seems to really only be used to tell someone "Hey that was a good post". And I just checked and saw that negative responses can be turned off so only positive and neutral can bee applied.

Just my 2cents.
