I just have to share our story of the Christmas Eve drama we had around here. I have a 6 yr old grandaughter that has wanted a guinea pig for a really long time. Her solution was to ask Santa for it. She visited with the jolly ole man a few times before Christmas and each time asked for the pig. Her parents really were not keen on the idea but since she still believes they had to come through. Thursday morning the went to a local pet shop and purchased a pig and all the accessories needed. They have a very nice heated garage so the pig was placed in it's new cage home and spent the rest of the day in the backseat of the pick up where it would be nice and warm. Everyone attended church services then came to our house to exchange gifts before heading home to await Santa's arrival. The girls both headed off to bed and were soon fast asleep. Mom and Dad took this opportunity to play Santa. When my SIL went to the garage to retrive the pig... tragedy..it was dead! The poor thing was stiff as a board. The pet shop had 3 of them and my daughter picked the one that seemed less active....now we know why...it was sick! What to do? The daughter called me in a panic. We came up with the idea of writing a note from Santa telling her she had a pig waiting on her at the pet store, because he could not carry animals in the sliegh. It worked, she was so excited Christmas morning to see the home for her soon to arrive pig that she never suspected anything.
Today they went to the pet store (with the dead on in a box hidden in the trunk of the car) and she now has a new LIVE brown & black pig! Santa did a good job.
My husband always says "It's all about the stories" and now we have a good one from this Christmas. We are hoping that this little pig lasts longer than 12 hours! When she is older and no longer believes in Santa we will tell her this story and laugh about it. Just hate it for the original little pig that he will be the brunt of our laughs.
Get your pets from the SPCA folks.
They won't try to slip you a dud. All their animals are healthy, have the shots, and are screened for temperament....
And you are probably saving its life, on top of everything else.

I loved your story. I had a pig when I was younger. They for one live a long time, and two it is hard to tell the sex of the thing. To my mom's surprise Homer turned into Homerine, and gave us lots of babies.
Also, When she heard the frig door open, she would make a noise. They are great for left over raw veggies.
Sue, when she is much older, she will know how much you all went through to make her happy
Years ago... we had a hamster, then, one day we didn't! Not sure if the dog ate it,or it's shriveled up somewhere..One day when I am cleaning I may find it's remains...oy....
