20 Secrets Your Waiter Will Never Tell You - Food on Shine
This is an interesting article. I also have a question for the group on tipping. I always tip 15% on the total bill. My hubby tips 20% on the pre tax bill. Our tips are always about the same. It's California sale tax is 8.75%. My question to the group is do you tip on the full bill or the pretax amount?

We tip on the "total" bill which would be after the taxes are added. I never even thought about tipping on the pre-tax amount. We just look at the total bill and go from there. Depending on the service we tip as much as 20 % sometimes.

My hubby doubles the tax and then rounds up to the next whole dollar. So say the bill is $20 pre tax then the is the tax is $1.75. He doubles it to $3.5 then goes up to $4.00.
I figure 15% of $21.75 which is $3.26 then I go up to the next dollar $4.00. I never leave change in a tip. As a hair stylist I always hated getting change to easy to lose.
My hubby feels his method is easier. I like to do the math in my head it keeps my brain working right.

Unless service is bad I will tip 20% of total bill and usually round up. Only once have I ever asked to see the chef and even then it was the sous chef (my grandson) and he would be fixing most of what we were ordering. I already knew that he was there, but he didn't knew we were. He had had to go into work before we got in town and we didn't know if we would see him before the next morning.

Katlady --not all CA sales tax is the same-- ours in San Jose is 9.25----and i varies locally--- Santa Cruz is a bit less and Fremont is a big higer----it too hard to keep track-----
I'm lucky enough to go out to eat more than I stay home and cook--hahaha--think coupons---but both my husband and I generous tipper--but then again it does depend on service too---and yes--we tip on the full price---before any coupon offer-----
Cheers

I usually tip 20% on the full amount and round up. The exception would be for poor service. If there are 2 of us, I will always tip a minimum of $2, regardless of the bill. I appreciate the hard work of the waitstaff, and know that they depend on their tips.

I usually tip 20% of the total bill for good service, or 15% of the total bill for questionable service. Our sales tax here in Florida varies from county to county, but we have no state income tax.

I agree I came from the Bay Area the sales taxes is much higher there. I think San Francisco has the one of the highest sales taxes in the state at 9.5%.
Here is the thing if someone in a different state is tipping 20% on the full bill. But the sales taxes is quite a bit lower then California then the tip is slightly lower. So my 15% on the total bill with the round up to the next full dollar is close to the 20% in a state with a lower sales tax. I'm not cheap honest I'm not.

and tipping is not the same in other countries -----sometime it can be an insult ----if you over tip and others ??
I know when I'm in Canada --with my Canadian friend she tells me not to tip as much -----its different there---------
I too tip a bit more extra for service if its given -----and with the way things are theses days---going out to eat is more of a luxury for some than for others-----and the waiters and waitress are not having the customers as they used to either---and even with some resturants offering more specials-----at reduced pricing----2 meals for 20.00--etc etc-----times are still tough------
