Madeira/Funchai Devastated by Mudslides

Those of you who have made ports of call at Madeira might wish to be made aware of horrendous mudslides on the island, especially around and in Funchal, that have taken at least 38 lives. There are also missing but no one as yet knows how many.

Having never been there I do not know exactly what, but it's my understanding that tourist areas have been hard hit.

I apologize for the typo in the headline, but the darned system wouldn't let me change it.

My husband saw this article and showed it to me, because my dad is from Madeira Island in Camacha. I have relatives on the island still. I hope they are okay. Since the Capitol is Funchal most articles talk about it. Have you heard any news about other areas? I'm going to check Yahoo UK and see if there is more information.

I was so sorry to hear about the mudslides in Funchal, Madeira. On our repositioning cruise, last April, Funchal, Madeira was our first port of call. Rob and I found the people there to very friendly; we loved going on the tram, visiting the winery, visiting a store that sold beautiful embroidered items and Rob loved going on a ride, downhill, that was pushed by the locals. (of course I chickened out of that!). Our hearts go out to the people of this lovely island.
