There is more to travel than just going somewhere. Many people log up the places they travel like charms on a bracelet. Though they have been to many places they've never really experienced them. There is more to travel than just getting to your destination and adding it to a list.

A well traveled person takes the time to appreciate and enjoy the culture, history and people of the places they visit.

Take care,
Mike

Thank you for your answer. I am proud to fall in this category.

I allways appreciate the history and culture of all the place that I have visited. Since I am a people person and a history buff, I usually come back from my trips with new knowledge, and the desire to do more traveling.

I try to explain this when people try to say how much they know about a place they have had a quick cruise visit at, when sometimes a person who has stayed there can know a bit more......

That is why I spent a year in Southeast Asia. I did get to know the place.

This question and answer reminds me of the people who complain that someone could not have enjoyed the cruise experience unless they went to the dinningroom every night.

I guess I took it kind of personal, because I am one of those who are busy adding up my trips to each state, and although I don't have a charm, I do collect spoons from the states, and countries I visit.

A good example is my side trip to Minn last week. It is true that I did not spend not one night in that state, but it is not true that I did not enjoy the beautiful country side, and the people. I am also a research person, who finds out about the state long before I arrive, so I pretty much know the culture.

This is one of those times that we try to box people in, and try to make them less than, because they don't follow the standards of others.

Travel should be what the person enjoys, and not what the standard should be according to others.

Luanne,

When you came to Minnesota did you look for a Luby's Cafeteria to eat in and were disappointed that you didn't find one? Did you wonder why there weren't any Cowboys or Texans t-shirts for sale? Was the Mall of America the only place you stopped? Did you only speak to the people who rang up your purchases?

I believe the answer to all of those questions would probably be "No". There is nothing wrong in collecting mementos and tabulating the places you've been. Everyone does that. It's when someone merely concentrates on the destination and not taking in what they find before, during and after they get there, is when they have short changed themselves.

An example would be someone who has been to the Caribbean many times but has never gone any farther than the port area and only shopped at Diamonds International. They went on a ship. They never went to the Caribbean. If a person like that says they are well traveled they are deluding others and themselves. If that person says they have been on many cruises then they are being truthful to themselves and others.

Take care and I didn't mean to offend.
Mike

My sweet Mike, You did not offend me.

Never would I look for a Luby's YuK!! We actually ate fries on the way to the mall, at ........drum roll.... Mc D's. Their choice, not mine.

Once we arrived at the mall, I asked for some place where I could get local food. They directed me to a pizza place. I do not remember the name, but it was not that great.

On the way up (2 hours from the hotel) I drove them crazy about what I was seeing, and what town was known for what.

I learned about the Amish, and the fact that the Little House author was born there. I learned about the yearly rainfall, and snow of course. I also learned about the the little pointy things that stick out of the fire hydrants.

I also learned that it was not mountains I was seeing, but bluffs. Here we would call them hills.

I agree that it would have been great to learn more, and to stay longer, but time was limited.

For the first 20 years of my adult life, when we went some place, we were moving there. Money was tight, so it was either move, and stay awhile, or not go. (I can say "where it the TP in 3 languages")

Today it is such a joy to go somewhere new, get a feel of the place, and then go back home.

I have also done tours of the islands, away from the ports and was between shocked, to saddened, at what I saw.

I still say that to travel is to go some place new. if you can, by all means eat what the locals eat, learn a little of the culture, talk to the people, but I don't think there is a time limit you must stay in order to count it.

One more thought about Minn. I went into a local store, and asked for a spoon. The lady behind the counter spoke just like one of Rose's realitives on Golden Girls. It took everything I had not to laugh.:-D

My sweet Mike, I loved your state. It is beautiful, but I did learn something that I never thought to not say. "I sure wish I could see the snow"

if possible, when you travel, arrange to eat dinner at a host home...gives you a whole different perspective

Since I have relatives in Portugal, France, Germany, Italy and Canada it has been rather easy to eat with local familes.

I have picked strawberries, grapes and fava beans on one of my trips to Italy. We also have picked oranges in Spain.

Of course since I am a native of Portugal it would be too much to mention the things that I have done over there.

Of course I allways make sure that I sample the local wines.
