Default Just a thought

I find it interesting that so many people view a new thread and for some reason choose not to post on it

It is the way it is on almost every message board and blog site. Most people are only interested in reading. It could be for cruise research or fun but they have no desire to participate.

Currently, on Cruisemates, there are about 200 readers (lurkers) for every one person who posts.

It is a reason that we try to welcome new posters and also why we can and do delete posts that ridicules someone for their spelling or grammar and why direct attacks are not allowed on the boards.

If someone is leery about posting they definitely will not post if they feel they may be ridiculed.

It's also why I have an issue when someone posts a complaint and within ten minutes to two hours they are labeled a troll and a hit and run poster. Most people only check online once or twice a day and if they make a post, even a negative one, and come back the next day and see that they have been labeled, slammed and not offered any constructive feedback they will not continue to post and if they do then it's just to bite back. Once that happens the thread loses all relevance and credibility.

Take care,
Mike

200 lurkers for every 1 poster that's interesting because we have such a wide variety of topics in chit-chat there should be ample opportunity for someone to contribute if they so choose

I would also suspect that the internet is still not comfortable for alot of folks or they don't trust it, but it's still interesting to read the postings

I only post on things that I have an opinion on or am interested in. Also I have found that "regular" members on most sites resent anyone who posts a lot, I have been accused of trying to take over sites by posting a lot....in fact I was banned from one site for "posting way too much on too varied subjects".
Good point about those who post something & maybe don't realise it is contentious but only log on say morning & evening, get labelled as a troll because of it.
As far as being "afraid" to post in case someone gets offended or ridicules one, well it's only words on a screen, nobody knows who you are (or shouldn't) so let 'em have it back I say!! Now I know the gentle people here don't like that sort of thing, & admin here tend to spot trouble & jump on the person who STARTS the trouble, but elsewhere I can assure you admin take the view that if you respond, it is YOU that are the problem. I think that if admin don't deal with those who start trouble you should be able to defend yourself.

I enjoy posting here and I enjoy reading everyone's posts.
I don't see anyone resenting people who post a lot.

There are many interesting topics here and opinions from a lot of well informed and witty posters.

Keep it up folks!

I didn't say here, but take it from me on other sites some people just don't like it, you get a group/clique/inner circle that resent newcomers, especially if they have run out of things to say & the newcomer has not!! or has the temerity to disagree with them.

I myself know of 2 people who joined in 2009 who choose to lurk rather than post .I've tried in vain to get them to share their points of view

I don't care for any other site. I like Cruisemates.
