A friend that we will be cruising with suggested that the men in our group wear money belts because several of the areas we will be in are popular pickpocketing places .Is this aomething that my fellow cruisers on this board do regularly or is it just being too fearful ?
I rarely carry one in the Caribbean but in Europe, Asia or anywhere I will be an extended distance from the ship I do.
In the Caribbean I never carry anything other than some walking around money, a credit card, ship card and the ship's agents information.
In other places where I will need more money and my passport I will carry a money belt like the one below. It goes under your pants and is only used for "deep storage". I carry my walking around money and a credit card in a secured pocket. You don't want to pull your pants down to pay for a cup of coffee.
One last thing. I always carry a $50 or $100 bill, or equivalent amount of native currency, tucked under the insole of my shoe.
Get the money belt. Leave most of your valuables and cash in the hotel/stateroom safe and have a great time.
Take care,
Mike

I carried a money belt on my European cruise. There were fellow cruise passengers on that cruise that were pick pocketed in Italy I think. I did not do the neck type money pouch it felt that was to easy to grab from my neck and I could have been hurt in the process. I wore the one around the waist under my clothes. I kept a small amount of spending money in my front pocket, but most of my money along with my passport was safe in the money belt around my waist. The salon I worked at was robbed at gun point while I was working. Being careful and aware of your surroundings is important to a safe and enjoyable vacation. I don't mind being fearful if it makes me less of a target for criminals.

I have worn the one around my waist in europe with great success (I kept most of my credit cards and money in there) I kept smaller bills in a regular pocket in my jeans. I was glad I had the money belt when I was touring poland in the 90s and there were several children running around me asking for money. If I had a purse I am sure they would of grabbed it.
I am a relatively big person ,6'5+ and in all my years on this earth nobody has ever attempted to remove anything from my person .However one of my friends cruising with us happened to be mugged while on a shore excursion a few years ago and ever since he has worn a money belt .
I took extraordinary precautions with a money belt and small pouch around my neck under my top when we went to Europe, especially Rome and Barcelona, just because they have some very talented and effective pickpockets there. I do not think it is paranoid thinking.
I have a pair of pants with two zip-open places in the waist band. The zippers hide under a pleat that in turn hides under my belt, and I can stash two or three bills folded longways in each.
