It was reported (on Fox news, of all places) that in the past week, 14 firearms were found on people trying to go through security to board airplanes.... and hundreds of pocket-knives and such.

What caves have those travelers been living in?

Kuki, where are those reports? I'd like to read them! I can't believe that anyone would be "so misinformed" (okay, stupid)! Thanks,

Fern.. it was on Fox news TV this afternoon. Could be on their web site, I don't know.

On the local news this evening, a flight from Burbank to Pheonix today, a child found a full ammo clip on the floor of the airplane.

The world is a weird place, and apparently filled with lots of folks short on gray matter

You can go to the TSA website. It tells you the amount of incidents that took place over the past week.

2 artfully concealed prohibited items found at checkpoints

12 firearms found at checkpoints

14 passengers were arrested after investigations of suspicious behavior or fraudulent travel documents

Ah, did they actually become passengers (that is, make it onto the airplane)???

The ammo clip was identified as belonging to a policeman who was on board, and he had the carry documentation. He must have been very red in the face!!!!

I was able to carry a tweezer last week in my handbag with no issues as in past years.

Something new to me were these prohibited items:

Gel shoe inserts - Gel shoe inserts are not permitted, but shoes constructed with gel heels are allowed and must be removed and screened.

Snow globes and like decorations regardless of size or amount of liquid inside, even with documentation.

Being the TSA is now handling more packages that the post office, no way am I going to participate in this "Security Threatre".

Terrorists have yet to have been caught at any of our security checkpoints. And they have already moved on to their next mode of disruption while we are patting ourselves on the back reacting to the past.

And they certainly have already exposed more than G'ma's boobs, that these things wouldn't have caught the underwear bomber.

We are not fighting "one in ten". We are fighting a specific enemy, and I refuse to be the random guinea pig just to balance out what they are really looking for.

And MOST important, I will NOT subject my children to this nonsence.

Flying is now a thing of the past for us.

I live in the UK - a small island group - so if we wish to travel and see the world, we have to fly. Pat downs and body scanners are a relatively small price to pay for the privilege of flying.

I remember the interrogation I was subjected to by Israeli security when I took a ferry from Cyprus to Israel in 1992. Trust me you would opt gladly for BOTH a body scan and a Pat Down.

If you don't like the security measures - simple - don't fly - your choice.

The whole world is subject to these measures - not just the USA.

BTW Happy Thanksgiving!

Flying out of the UK after the Lockerbie bombing, I was "made to feel safe" by going through no less than 5 security checkpoints.

That didn't work out too well, eh?

I'm sorry that you have chosen not to fly anymore, although I would bet you flew very little to begin with. I'm sure the airlines are sorry too for losing so much of you business. How you raise your kids is up to you but I'm glad to see you set a good example of cooperating with the authorities in front of the kids at the airport in trying to help save just maybe one life. That's a good way to show the kids respect for rules, civility, etc. Good for you. You don't want to " subject " them to these dastardly actions at the airport by people whose job it is to try to catch the one in a few thousand that just may be the one to bring a plane load of other parents, kids, grand parents, etc. down. Good job!! But as you've given up flying, you don't have to be concerned about it anymore, as you and yours won't be aboard a plane anyway.
Do you also protect them from all the trash, profanity, nudity, semi-nudity, etc. that they are bombarded with every day on T.V and the movies? I hope so, as that shows you do care.
Also, making sure they don't eat too much pizza, Big Macs, Quarter Pounders and Large fires, all washed down with sugar laden drinks is the right thing to do too.
I'm happy you made the right decision for you and the traveling public as that's one less bunch to hold up the line and help it move more smoothly. Thanks and safe driving--hope you're not run over by a drunken or drugged out driver--or someone who's using a cell or otherwise distracted while their mind should be on the road and what's around them.
Good luck and happy holidays! :-D:-D

I think a lot of people bucked at the idea and now have calm down and accepted what needs to be done, it was obvious at the airport checkpoints this holiday week. Things ran smoothly and most people had no problem with it at all. I think people have a lot of anger about the way things are in the country and thought this was a good way to protest. I guess people do what they have to do.

I flew into and out of Israel 3 years ago. It was a very interesting experience. It was funny though because they do do things differently than here. They were very polite and I felt very safe without being worried about the pat downs ect. My luggage was screened and they "found" something. I had too put my luggage on the table and they then asked me if I had bought any Sea salts. I had. They had me point to where it was in my luggage. I did and they opened it up and very carefully lifted the clothes up and saw them. Replaced everything and closed everything up. I did notice though that every time anyone talked to us they looked us right in the eyes and did not look away. We are flying to Miami for our next cruise in Jan and I am worried about it. I have had several MRI's, xrays and CAT scans in the last year (another one scheduled on Tues) and really don't want any more "rays" in me. We will probably start driving after this.

On your round-trip flight (4 hours) you will receive about the same amount of radiation you would receive in a standard chest x-ray. 8 millerems of radiation.

That is about 100 times more than the radiation you will receive from the scanner. You receive much more radiation from the flight than the scan but both are minimal.

Take care,
Mike

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Sorry, the cold must be getting to my brain but you have still lost me - Lockerbie never made me feel 'safer'.

However I believe the new TSA regulations are necessary and I for one have no issue with them.

If you are unhappy about the regulations, simply don't fly but all forms of transport have an element of risk.

Let me redirect you to my statement about having to go through no less than 5 security checkpoints at GLA after Lockerbie happened.
