Question Off the Beaten Track

OK here is another challenge picture.

This one is a little off the beaten track.

Where is it?

It looks a lot like Altun Ha in Belize, but I don't recall the add-on at lower bottom.

The devil is in the details!

There are lots of Maya sites to visit ... trying to pinpoint which one is the game here ... Notice the little frond covered shelter half way up, that was sort of unique to this one, I think.

Definitely a Western Caribbean cruise.

Although it's been a few years since I was there, I believe this is the Kohunlich Mayan ruins outside Costa Maya, Mexico.

Talking Costa Maya

Right you are -- well, almost!

It is indeed from Costa Maya. Specifically it is Chaccoben.

Interestingly enough, at one point I put my hand on a rock wall, and our guide (the guy in that picture) noticed my Masonic ring. He gave me the "secret" grip and told me he was a member of the Lodge in Cozumel. I run into brother Masons all over the world.

Heck I was close anyway ! I knew it was one of the Mayan sites near Costa Maya.
We've not been out and about from Costa Maya since about 3 years or so ago when they were devastated by the hurricane. We've been back twice since but just went down to Mahahaul and then back to the shopping area.
I really like the place and would encourage anyone who goes there to get out and about to visit some of these Mayan sites.

I definitely agree with you. We haven't been back since the hurricane. I hope they have recovered.

Of course that is the place where the cruise lines try to "trap" you with their own custom built tourist port and only a couple of poorly marked exits from it. But getting out of the tourist trap to the ruins is well worthwhile. Our full trip report is at The Halls Western Caribbean Cruise as well as a link to David and Ivan, who were our great guides. Hope their business weathered the hurricane.
