Kindles and Ipads,and Books, oh my:)

We had Christmas today. I got a kindle. I think my brother thought the books would be free because I got no amazon card to go with. Anyway, I've bought two books and and two short stories. I won't be giving up buying the real thing or using the library any time soon, and I am sure I'll be downloading free books too. I have a feeling I've got a lot to learn here. The Kindle I got is just the standard one, which is fine. So, how long will a charge last?

Moiraine, congratulations on the new Kindle! I got one last Christmas, and it's the best gift I've ever received. Mine's strictly for reading. Keith got a Kindle Fire this Christmas, which does a lot more, and he loves it, too.

You'll probably get varying answers on how long a charge lasts. For mine, it takes about 2-1/2 to 3 hours to charge up and it lasts about three weeks. The Fire charges up faster and doesn't last as long.

I just started reading Jo Nesbo's "The Leopard." I can't put it down.

Moraine, all I can say is the Kindle will become a good friend...welcome to the Kindle Club...shout, if you want links to all the sites that offer the freebies. It amazes me how many are not Nook free, but free for the Kindle.

Many times, free books,are free for short periods of time, so grab em when you see em...most of all, enjoy every page

I hope you got a "regular" Kindle and not the Kindle Fire. I've been watching on the Amazon site and there seem to be lot's of problems with the new Fire.

I finished my first Kindle book last night. It was book five of the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. Number six is sitting here on my desk waiting for me. I checked it out from the library. Number five was out when I went on Friday. I can see where having a Kindle will be very handy. I have one little petty complaint. I wish they had put the bookmark closer to the top of the menu.

I never used the bookmark...it always opened to the page I was last on.

I have neversed the bookmark either. when it goes to sleep mode and I wake it it is right back where I was. Even if I go to the home page to down;oad and watch to see how many, when I reopen the book it is back.

I guess if you are reading more than one book at a time then bookmark would be very usefull.

when you turn it off, for good..make sure to hold it down, so, it shuts off, not just sleeping, Moraine.

I too have never had to bookmark where I left off, it always remembers...Heck, how do you bookmark anyway?

It's part of my menu,button just to the left of home.... right in there where you can change font size and all of that, only it eight down on the menu.

I also don't use the book mark. My latest book is about the Rat Pack in Vegas. So far it is really good.

Is anyone going to read the new Obama book, called "The Obama's"?

I don't use the bookmarks, either. I also never turn it off. The only time it ever gets shut off completely is when it installs an update and reboots itself.

Now I'm curious.....why would you need to shut it off, instead of just letting it sleep?

My thinking is, sleeping, it is using up the charge, thoughts?....but to me when I am done, it gets turned off.

Here's what I do: when I'm reading I turn the wireless off, when I'm downloading books, etc., I turn the wireless on. When I'm not doing either, I plug the Kindle into my computer and leave the wireless on.

You do not need to power down Kindle 2 between reading sessions, it is best to leave the device in sleep mode. Holding the switch at the top to power the device off is similar to pulling the power cord on your computer without shutting down the Operating System. If you turn the device off while in the middle of the book, the device cannot save that location. We save the location when the device goes into sleep mode or when you leave the book, so if you do need to power the device off then be sure to go to the Home screen first - this will save your last place in the book.

The general consensus seems to be that it uses less battery to use sleep mode verses turning it all the way off. Hope that helps!

The general consensus on the kindle forum is, sleep..the moderator has not chimed in yet....for me, it's just habit, to turn to off.

Then new Bernie Madoff book is waiting for me at the library,and I just started the new Stephanie Plum..

Not exactly. You get one free loan per calendar month, and they have a list that you can choose from. It's a nice added perk, but with all of the free books available out there, not a huge deal.

I order a lot of things from Amazon other than books, and my Prime has already paid for itself, with the discounts I have received.
