Which Sony do you have Mike? I'm really surprised you find the Kindle screen superior, but maybe we don't have the same model.

I have the PRS-500. I believe that was the first, or one of the first, of the Sony readers. I will say that the Sony's display is better in direct sunlight but I can't get the font changed like I can with the Kindle. The Sony also allows you to use PDF files without converting them.

However the newer Kindle is easier to read in regular light and the page refreshes at a must faster rate.

I also have to qualify that I use these for mostly tech information and not for recreational reading. I actually haven't fired up the Sony in almost a year.

Take care,
Mike

Yep, the 500 was the first one. I have the 505 which experts still keep saying is the best screen out there. I haven't read on my Ipad yet, other than magazines.

I am curious Ipad readers, does the graphic of the page turning in the corner, annoy you, or do you get used to it in time...When I saw that feature, I thought, I don't think that would make me happy...can the visual be turned off, or is that just the way it is?

Default Kindles and iPads and Books, Oh My!

I have been reading your comments and can't wait to rip open that Kindle box Christmas morning! I have a couple of questions, though:

1. If you own a Kindle, can you order books from sources other than Amazon?

2. If the Kindle gets full up, are you saying you can't take things out?

Smile mysteries involving cruises

to Trip. I read your posting on mysteries and I would sure like to see the list and perhaps can add to it. I couldn't get on to this site as I forgot my password or maybe wheter my user name was one or two words. I love all types of mysteries and have found many series and singles concerning cruises.

thank you. I see there are many I havent read on your list but I think I can add a series by Stella Whitlaw that I found in my localBaltimore county library. I read #2,3,&4 SECOND SITTING,a WIDE BERTH ,and DEAD SLOW AHEAD. They feature a young cruise director on various ships of a British company.

Crazysis, what size Kindle do you have, six-inch or nine-inch? I wonder if the six inch is too small? Oh well, it'll take some gettng used to anyway, after all these years of holding a book.

If you get a cover,it will be just like holding a book, and you can choose your font size.

Just an FYI, the author's name is Stella Whitelaw and as of now, her books aren't available on Kindle .

Judy, I didn't have any trouble adapting to the Kindle.

i didnt know that there were different size kindles. mine has the 3g. its not that much bigger than a paperback. its real light so i can hold it in one hand to read. you can change the fonts too. you just need to be careful about putting pressure on the screen. its a good idea to get a case.

What happens if you put too much pressure on the screen?

That is true all books you buy for a Kindle are stored at Amazon --you can store and re-download them at anytime ---this is why one never will lose content and the Kindle will never fill up.---I love mine. I also still use the library. These are wonderful for anyone who loves to read.

Last night I finished " Mary Todd Lincoln a Bio" by Jean Harvey Baker

It was wonderful, but very sad. Did you know pensions for former first ladies had not been established when Pres. Lincoln was murdered. She received his pay for a portion of the month he worked. She and others lobbyied to have something set up for the wives.

I have now started "With Hitler To The End" by Hitler's valet We have heard so much about Hitler, but not much about his everyday life. I am also hoping to get some idea of why he did what he did.

It should also be noted that included in your Kindle is a way to look up words you do not know, by simply clicking on the word.

I also have downloaded a game Sudoku. It drives me crazy, but Jim always plays and I wanted to learn too.

Luanne,if you can watch for repeats on the History Channel....I watched 2 shows about Hitler this week...one was about his family, which, not too much was known..the other was, home movies taken by Germans...both were fascinating, and horrible at the same time..One movie they showed, is not allowed ot be shown in Germany...

my first kindle the screen inside cracked. amazon said that you cant put pressure on the screen. they replaced it with no problems. i just had to ship the damaged one back. i was able to transfer my books to the new kindle without a problem. you can archive books to amazon so they are not on your kindle. you can retrieve them easily by just going to the archived application on the kindle and redownloading the book. amazon will store your books for you so your kindle doesnt get full. i would definitely advise getting the kindle with 3g for alittle more money.

You can only store the books you buy from Amazon on Amazon. They also will only keep the books as long as they sell that book. If they discontinue the book you won't get it back.

They don't really store "your" book. They just keep track of the books you've purchased and downloaded. If you want to reload a book they will reload it from their inventory.

Any books or other media you download from any other source will not be available at Amazon.

Take care,
Mike

Thanks Mike,
Even though you can only re-download a book they have in their inventory, still a pretty cool idea. I basically buy best sellers in paperback, and after I have a good pile going, I give them away, so I never store any books, so this would be ideal for me...

the challenge with technology is that you buy something today, the next day it's outdated..I read this morning that you can now purchase a Nook that comes in color (perfect for reading my 32 magazine subscriptions online)...so if I had purchase a black and white one a month ago, i would be very upset this morning
