Default Kindles and iPads and Books, Oh My . . .

Addiction seems to be the right word. When I got the Kindle for Christmas, I wondered if we'd be scrapping over it. My DH says I don't leave it alone long enough for him to read it!

Luanne, I am listening to L.A. Times now..loving it again! I did see he has another new one coming called, Belair Dead...Did you know "Elaine" the restaurtant owner he writes about inhis books passed away recently?

I emailed him recently..he is very short with his responces.....I wonder if we will just go on, with her in his books..I hope so.

I bought this book because you recommended it, and I wasn't disappointed! It'd NOT in my usual genre, but I enjoyed the southern "style". What else do you recommend?

I recently read Faye Kellerman's The Ritual Bath. I bought it for $.99 and I really enjoyed it! Of course, now if I want to read the rest of the series, I have to either shell out $7.99 a book, or go to the library (my choice )

Fern, check out Kathy Trochek..she has a great fun homespun series I really enjoyed.

The southern sisters mystery series makes me laugh..love these 2 women.Murder Makes Waves started me off.
Amazon.com: southern sisters mystery

Elaine Viets, has 2 series..Dead End Job series, set in Fll, and you swear you will start to perspire,as she writes about the area..A+A+A+A+. Her other is set in St Louis, and she is a mystery shopper..right up my alley..Love em all...

Rita Lakin, makes me wish I lived with this group of women. I crave her books.

Steve Forman has 2 books so far...Boca Knights, and Boca Mournings...both wonderful reads...

Fatal February, is another must read..Level 26 I read, and his next one is in my stack......ok I will stop now..at least for a while!

Finally, after 2 weeks of reading in the evenings and weekend the battery of kindle was low. Then the battle started ......... we tried all kind of trics to get it charged again, nothing worked. Not on electricity, not on computer or laptop, no nothing.
Then my husband got a brainwave and he said, wait, maybe it works if we use the travel plug and presto!! Dont know why, but I can read again.
Will start Millenium this week from Stieg Larson.

I love Stone Barrington, too! I just finished Strategic Moves. Also just read a mystery by Sister Carol O'Marie. I really like Stieg Larsson. Last week, I read Book One of the Girl Who . . . trilogy and have the other two in my Kindle.

If you like who dunnits set in the South, you might want to try Laura Childs Teashop Mysteries. She also has a Scrapbook Mysteries series. The Teashop Mysteries take place in Charleston. Can't get 'em on Kindle, though.

My children want me to buy a kindle .My feeling is that the more kindles the less book stores .Borders is filing for bankruptcy .Neighborhood book stores are closing .In my entire city there is only one book store .The next nearest book store is 45 minutes away .

I'm not getting the email, but I look every evening at the list of "free" books on the Kindle site. I really find it strange that the first two or three free books are new. I'd think that popular free books would "work their way up" :???:.

I wish there was a way to "ignore" certain genre's.

I've got more books on my Kindle than I'll ever be able to read .

My Kindle became an addiction, I have not read so many books in years as since I have it. Now I am reading Millenium, finished book 1 in 3 days, halfway book 2 now. Long weekend ahead of us, going away, nice change to read in hotel

Default A Kindle Kwestion from a Kindle Kinde.....

...who can't spell either....(wink, wink)....

Well, Mrs. S. and I have joined the many other Cruisemates who are proud owners of Kindles. We have the ones with 3G and WiFi. We have yet to load any books, but I did manage to get my Canon camera manual PDF onto mine.

Now we are faced with a software update. I have tried to download to my pc and thence to the Kindle, but after 30 minutes or so, the download had not done anything, so I cancelled.

The email said to establish a WiFi connection, and the update would download and install itself. Unfortunately we do not have WiFi near us.

But we do have a strong 3G connection.

So, for all you Kindle mavens, will the download happen over the 3G connection, or do I really need WifI?

Also, any thoughts as to why the download to the pc didn't work?

Any help is appreciated in advance,

Oh boy - hope some people have answers. I've been to Best Buy twice trying to understand this.

I have Broadband - not Wifi (and I kind of doubt a 3G, but don't know) so will that work by downloading to the computer and then uploading to the Kindle? And, after you've done that you can delete it from your computer?

They were also mentioning getting a Wifi router for about $70.

I really don't want to sign up with Verizon for a monthly cost - if that's what's required.

I still haven't bought a Kindle - and this all is partly why.

Thanks for your help.

Cruznut,

Think of broadband as the same as a land line telephone, and wifi as a cell phone. I think 3G is wirelss also, but I am unsure of how it works technically. I am perfectly willing to accept it as magic.

The instructions say that you can download it to your pc, and then upload it to the Kindle. Yes, you can also then delete it from your pc. This is what I was trying to do without success.

Unless you have a laptop that you want to be able to connect to the internet with from anywhere in your house, you probably do not need a wifi router.

I'm with you, and hope some of the techno-wizards who see this can help.

I just can't believe how easy it is to pick up a new book.

Any of you watch the TV show "Castle"? Well, he is really an author and lives with his mom and daughter in NY....His books are real, so I found one and got it yesterday for a whole $5.00....Going to start it tonight...

Sid, this is a stupid question, but you did download the app for your computer (Amazon.com: Free Kindle Reading Apps
Right?

If so, a book should download to your computer within a minute. I'd either ask this question on the Amazon Kindle discussion board or call Customer Service. Customer Service is very good for the Kindle!

CruzNut, once you buy a router there shouldn't be any extra charges. We have one since I use the "big" computer and DH uses a laptop across the room.

Good luck,

Fern - or anyone else

I only have a desktop computer and from what Sid wrote it sounds like I don't need a router at all???

Then, without it - I'm guessing I would only be able to download books to my computer and then upload to the kindle???

Or do I or don't I have wi-fi now ... and if not, would I need to get something to make it wi-fi???

Thanks.

Cruznut,

Obviously all of our "techies" are out cruising or out for the evening.

I know almost nothing about computers but I do have Wi-FI and I guess a router and yes I pay I think $35 a month for DSL. I also have a Nook, which is just I guess another brand of E-Book.

But I was wondering. Since your Kindle is set up for Wi-Fi, could you not maybe go to a Starbucks, Atlanta Bread, or some store or restaurant that provides free WI-Fi and download your books there? Of course those are not protected Wi-Fi sites so you might want to try, if you can, and set up your account by phone.

Maybe none of this is possible or feasible in practice but in theory I thought, "Why not?"

Todd
