My Dear Mr. Watson !!!
what does everyone think of the upcoming Jeopardy contest between the 2 past great champions and an IBM computer ?

skymaster January 13th, 2011 04:14 PM

IMO, the outcome is TOTALLY dependent upon WHO writes the program, and enters the data in the computer. I think a 20 year old computer could whip a human if the computer is programmed correctly, and is loaded with the correct and complete information. ;) ie: Either the computer has the answers,,,,or it doesn't!

Do you know who the 2 champions were? Does sound interesting....

I play a trivia game against a computer and win 70% of the name .

So that's why you have Einstein as your avatar! ;-) rofl

BTW, what's Avatar mean?

Lakers Fan January 14th, 2011 08:49 AM

Actually I have Einstein for a totally different reason . There are some others I shall be using later this year .I'm thinking of perhaps Che .

Prior to joining CM I had never heard the word Avatar .

Wow ,I am in awe to be thought of as Albert Einstein or Norman Einstein as referred to by Joe Theissman .

Avatar is a perfectly good word in use long before message boards or computer games.

It refers to the appearance taken on by someone, particularly a Hindu deity, to be shown to the public. An avatar of the deity Ganesh, for example, is the well known crowned white elephant.

In online gaming, it is the image or persona used to play the game. For example in Lord of the Rings Online my avatar is a short fat white bearded dwarf with heavy armour and a huge axe.

And so, on message boards such as this one, it has come to refer to the little pictures we use to present ourselves to the readers of the board.

Interesting psychological questions are raised thereby, aren't they?

Ken has it right. If the computer has been programmed correctly and has the correct information on the database and can access it in a very short period of time then the computer will win.

It is question and answer. It requires nothing more than answering a specific question. The programmer will take the Jeopardy "question/that is an answer" format and reformat it to the computer as a question using keywords and syntax. If the computer can execute the instructions fast enough and execute the database search and display the answer faster than a human then it's a no brainer as to who will win.

The thing I know is that the computer will probably know every single answer but will it be able to display that answer fast enough?

People think computers are smart but they are not. They have no intelligence whatsoever. A program may give it the appearance of intelligence but a computer is stupid, really stupid. It must be told how to do the most minute task and it has to be told how to do it every time it does it.

Take care,

Today's St. Pete Times said they've done a trial run - and the computer is also (beyond all the data) programmed to push the buzzer faster.

Of course, "Hal" will win.

The 2 human experts are Ken who won the most games - something over 70 and another guy (don't remember his name) who won the most money ... something over $3 million.
