My first "bought by myself" car was a Ford Pinto ! I was very blessed that my dear father took me to buy another (ASAP!), and helped me buy a Mustang! I wish I still had it... .

I'm sure Ralph Nader wouldn't be too pleased, but it was a Corvair convertible, butter yellow in colour. It was actually my mom's car, but I learned to drive in it at 16. Loved that car!

First car was a 1967 Ford Country Squire station wagon. What a "chick mobile" that was. My Mom and Dad had purchased a new car and I got the old one.

I was in heaven. I was sixteen and had my own car and my Dad gave me a Mobil credit card and told me I could charge one tank of gas a week but I had to pay for my own insurance.

After two years the car succumbed to the "Detroit Iron" disease of rust and my Dad gave it a home bondo and paint job. It looked like hell. I then sold it and bought a 1967 GTO. I had that one for a year and my friend borrowed it and blew the engine. Ten years later he finally admitted he was racing it when the engine blew. I was in college by that time and didn't have the money or time to rebuild the engine so I sold it and bought a cheap '71 LTD two door. I loved that car even more than the GTO but I wish I now had the GTO. It would be worth a pretty penny.

Ah the good old days of cars. You thought you got your money's worth if it lasted over 100,000 miles. They rusted out in less than ten years (living in Minnesota) and you would celebrate if they started at temps below zero. With all the complaining people make about new cars I have to say that while the new cars don't have the "personality" of the classics they do run a lot better.

Take care,
Mike

My first was a Ford, Model T. It was a 1927 model. It was in 1936 and I was in High school. I loved the car because it was better than walking.

My Buddy would take our girl friends to Saturday Nite picture show in town which was about 10 miles away.

I remember one night, as we were racing along about 30 MPH, the floor board caught fire. It was made of wood so we stopped, pull out the floor board and started to look for water. None was around so we had to put the fire out some how. So the gals turned around and we put the fire out. I will let you guess how we did it.Loved that car.
My next one was a Ford Model A. Wonder if any are still around.

The first car I picked out strictly for myself was a 1990 Chrysler LeBaron convertible - white with a black top and burgundy interior. Loved that car but had to sell it in 2000 when my granddaughter arrived. Felt it was not safe to put a baby in a car seat with a "rag" top, so opted for a conventional 4-door sedan.

Trip..I had a convair monza spyder also..same color..6 speed stick with brown leather seats and sexy hubcaps...boy that car was fun to drive

my very 1st car was a 1959 VW beetle (black) with a cloth sunroof (that leaked when it rain), 4 speed with a hole in the floorboard that I use to put my foot thru to push and jumpstart, with a defroster that never worked in the winter no heater...my first "date" was in that car..

I bought a '40 Ford Coupe when I was 15, for $35! My dad wouldn't let me drive it as I didn't have my license yet, but that didn't stop me when he wasn't around. I later sold it and bought a '50 Ford 2 door. Sold it when I went into the Marine Corps.
I too had MANY Corvairs, as I used to restore them, and Mustangs. My daily driver was a '64 Monza Spyder Turbo Coupe! That little car would RUN! What great fun the Corvairs and Mustangs were to drive. Later, I got into Corvettes, and owned lots of 'em over the years. (Sure wish I had almost ANY of those cars now!)

Mine was a 1948 Morris Mini Minor that I bought for $25 in 1966. A friend and I took some tin snips to it, and made it a convertible (well, not really convertible, just roofless )

Then I bought a 59 Chevy, with a manual shift on the column. Put a big silver ball on the shifter. A few months later I "dropped" it into 3rd gear and the entire shifter broke off and fell to the floor. My steering wheel fell off once to, in the middle of a turn

Ray, I think your story is great! My uncle had a similar car and so did my grandfather! My uncle had a "Woody" station wagon. He was confined to a wheelchair, so this was the best car for him! He had a nice retired guy who drove him around because he couldn't drive. You'd never see this happen today... .

My first car I purchased when we moved upstate from Staten Island. It was a blue '72 Super Beetle with automatic shift (so Fran could drive it). It remains the best car I ever owned. We became a two car family when I bought her a '73 Karmann Ghia which she loved.

Todd..a VW mananother reason why I like you...are you aware that VW has built a prototype for a new Karman Ghia that could be introduced in 2013-2014 ?..as you well know the old Karman Ghia's were considered the poor man's Porsche and I bet your beloved Fran captured the attention of Steve McQueen driving down highway 9W racing her is his Porsche

Kuki, I too had a Morris Minor Convertible! Mine was actually factory made, but the side window frames stayed "up" on it when the top was down. It didn't have a gas gauge, so I carried a gallon of fuel around with me in the trunk. (Boy, that was safe wasn't it?) It had a BIG 1000 cc engine that got terrific fuel economy, but took forever to go from 0 to 60. Ah yes,,,those were the days!
