Default Hola! from Mexico to all of our C.M. Friends

This is just a quick update to say ¨Hola¨ to our many cruisemates friends. Our house building is going along well and on schedule here in Patzcuaro. We are sorry to have not yet posted photos but we are still using internet cafes because we decided not to get a cable hookup until we are out of the rental house and into the new home now well under construction.

We were having cruise withdrawls so have booked the April 16th sailing of the Celebrity Eclipse. This is a 13 night transatlantic voyage from Miami with stops in the Azores, Portugal, Spain, France and England. We´ll be staying a few nights prior in Florida with some good friends and in London post cruise with a different pair of fine amigos.

We´ve had a few driving getaways to Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo but this is our first cruise since Alaska last summer and we can hardly wait. I need to leave for a Comida (Late lunch) but will check in and report more in a few days.

The weather continues to be about 75f. daily with little change. Wow, what a change from the Pacific Northwest!

Hasta Luego Para Hoy! Chuck and David

Chuck, nice to hear from you,and glad to see the house is coming along.
You will just adore the Eclipse, it's a stunning ship, and looks like a high end hotel..the restuarants were great, and we enjoyed the entertainment.

Wondering what your take is, on the Mexican violence, and hope, you are not anywhere near any disturbances... Have a wonderful cruise.

So did you speak spanish before the move or has the immersion in the culture been a great way to learn quickly?

Thanks to everyone or the many kind words and good wishes.

The violence issue is way overstated in the news and is most unfortunate. Tourism is down and that is hurting the local hotels, restaurants, and the many people that depend on tourism for salaries, tips, etc. Tourism is Mexico's second largest industry after oil o course.

We have experienced zero problems and have only been treated with kindness, respect and helpfulness. The Mexican people are wonderful in every way and extremely honest and hard working.

We walk everywhere possible at all times of day. (eventhough we have a car) we feel extremely safe. We both joke that the Mexican drivers are far more dangerous then "La Familia" and other drug lords.

As for the language, being emersed definately helps increase our Spanish skills. Soon we will be taking classes and private lessons as well. In four years we will both be eligible to become dual citizens and that is our lofty goal. We need to be conversant in Spanish and have a general knowledge of Mexican history in order to meet the required standards. (Wish us luck! Retired teachers shouldn´t have to take any more tests, oe so it seems to me, lol!)

We just got a call this A.M. from our best friends, Mare´ & Conrad. They want us to visit them in Puerto Vallarta from Marcch 5 to 12. They have a two bedroom condo next door to their condo we can use for free, BONUS!
If we can work out the plans for someone to come in and look after "Knock-Knock," we´ll be off next week on another driving trip. They are about eight hours away by car and the "autopistas" (toll expressways) are excellent.

Hopeully it will all work out. We haven´t seen them for almost a year and they are both getting up there in age, so a visit is definately in order. David and I love to cook and they are both big time¨"foodies,¨ so I think a nice big whole fish huachinango Veracruzana dinner may be in our future, if I can find a beautiful large red snapper in the fish market in Vallarta. If not, David and I will need to go bottom fishing and catch our own. Oh darn!

Adios for now. Our house should be finished by the end of summer and we will gladly accept cruisemate visitors that want to see what colonial old world Mexico is all about. We will have great acommodations (your own private master bedroom sweet with two patios) and we are getting very good at giving tours...and becides free is a very good price!

So glad Chuck that you guys are safe, happy and the house is coming along well.

I truly was concerned for you two when the violence escalated, even in some of the major tourist areas as I didn't know just where in Mexico you actually were (it's a pretty big country). My late twin who spent almost if not a year way down in central Mexico and then over to the coast when we were young (he worked for everything he got as he didn't have any money), also said the same thing about the Mexican people.

I remember when I was a child mother would have a lady named Marie come in once a week to help her clean. We adored her and she us. One time, she had no way home for some reason and so Mom (and of course us because we were about six at the time) took her home (Marie was giving directions). Upon arrival even at six years of age, we were stunned at the poverty. My family had no money to speak of at all (there were four kids and only Dad worked because back then, mothers stayed home) so Mom cut corners just to have Marie in once a week. When mother saw how they lived from then on she cut more corners (which meant far more chicken than beef on Sunday and a major reduction in ice cream), paid Marie more and would always buy extra groceries and tell Marie they were, "....things I don't need." I didn't realize at the time that they were staples.

Marie's husband at some point went to visit in Mexico. When he returned, he brought back three like I think felt (I'd now call them almost closed vests) with gorgeous hand stiching around the entire edge, similar to what the Mariachi guys wear (you'd know the name). There were bright yellow ones for we twins and a sky blue one for my older brother who was ten. They were gorgeous and Mother and Dad were stunned. We absolutely treasured those vests for years and years, long after we outgrew them. I'll never forget that marvelous gift and such generosity.

Todd

Chuck, it's so great to hear from you and to know that things are going well. I haven't been to Patzcuaro, but I am very familiar with the beauty of colonial Mexico. I lived in Guanajuato and attended la Universidad de Guanajuato in my youth, and I loved it then and I still love it today. My Costa Rican husband only knows the coastal areas of Mexico (Puerto Vallarta is one of our favorite destinations) so I'd like to get him to the interior of Mexico when construction picks up and I start making some money again! Check in again when you can!

Well, there's a novel idea! I wish that was the case in Canada.

It is so nice to hear from my old CM friends.

Desert cruiser I had no idea you had lived in Guanajuato. David nor I have been there as yet but plan a visit there sometime in the next year. When you get ready to return to the area, send us an e-mail. We would be honored for you to come and see Patzcuaro and be our house guests...and I{m not just saying that!

Thanks again for the good wishes and kind thoughts!

Feliz Viajes! C&D
