Default Please explain upgrade process to me.

So, we sail in 10 days with HAL.

As of yet, I haven't heard anything with respect to upgrades. Are upgrades only available to those who book a gty?

We booked a specific cabin. Does that mean that I do not qualify for an upgrade?

If I dealt through a TA, would any upgrade/upsell offers only come through him? Can I / should I call HAL directly?

I do understand that no one is entitled to anything, and after all these years, I have never receive anything, but this is the first time we've actually booked early.

If I print out my e-docs (I've been holiding off) ... does that preclude me from getting any upgrades?

I do think it would come from a TA..I do know a woman who got a call from them, but, she was a TA..A call is worth the effort...

If I print out my e-docs (I've been holiding off) ... does that preclude me from getting any upgrades? don't see how printing them, has any connection to an upgrade.....good luck!

If you book a specific cabin your chances of an upgrade will be slim to none. It has happened but it is VERY rare.

People who book a specific cabin usually want that cabin so an automatic upgrade can really irritate someone.

Upsells are becoming more common and "usually" come right through the cruise line. The TA receives no commission on the upsell.

This close to your sail date I would stop hoping for an upgrade or an upsell, especially since you booked a specific cabin, print your e-docs and just look forward to a great cruise.

Have a great time.

I have to agree with the rest here, don't think there will be any upgrade, but you can always call your travel agent and see if you can get one at a cheap price, doesn't hurt to ask. Usually when you book a specific cabin, that is what you get, since they think that is what you want. I usually book a guarantee now and so far, never got an upgrade....

I also think that getting an upgrade, does not always make someone happy. Bumping up a deck or two, to me is not a big deal...especially going up and forward..what is golden to one, is not to another. By booking a specific cabin, as I do as well, is basically telling them..I like where I am.

I was hoping for an upgrade to a grand suite from our ocean suite. I picked the room we wanted so I guess no upgrade for me.

HAL is big on offering the upgrade opportunities through TA's. Sometimes within days of sailing. I had a friend that received an upgrade to a much better cabin on his 14 day Hawaii this year for only $29 pp. So it can happen.

I believe upgrades are determined by height, GPA scores in high school, eye color, alphabetical by first name, zodiac sign, zip code, right or left handed, smoking or non-smoking, paper or plastic.

In other words, I'm convinced they are totally random.

In over 40 cruises, I have been upgraded ONCE and that was on the old Sky Princess in 1995. I was upgraded to a suite, but the suites on the Sky Princess did not have balconies. Still, it felt good to say, "I'm in Suite 10".

I have not got an upgrade in years. The last one was only given because I asked to be moved. Our cabin on the Carnival Pride was right under the public bathrooms outside the main show lounge. I could just imagine listening to that all night. I called the and asked to be moved. We were given an outside cabin instead of the inside one we had.

There was someone who understood the upgrade process, unfortunately they had to admit him to the state mental hospital on a permanent basis.

That''s right. No rhyme or reason. Lately, I've been booking guarantees, just for the fun of it, and haven't been disappointed yet. Each time, I've gotten an upgrade, and once an upsell.
It's all good.

Talking The Upgrade Fairy

The reservations department of any cruise line is a large room, full of eager young representatives with powerful computers, messing around with cabin assignments. Their principal function is to make Travel Agents tear their hair out and to say NO to upgrade requests. However, over in the corner is a rickety old desk with an obselete computer system and a rotary dial phone. It belongs to an elderly clerk who is usually out on sick leave. But when she does come into the office, occasionally she lays her knitting down on the keyboard and it strikes a random key which gives an upgrade, sometimes a wonderful upgrade, to somebody. She is known as the UPGRADE FAIRY, and no living human being has any idea how she chooses the reservations that she touches with her magic. The best thing to do is to book a guarantee for a category that you will be fully satisfied with. If you wind up in that category be happy and enjoy your cruise. And if ... just IF ... the Upgrade Fairy touches you, then congratulate yourself that you are one of the lucky ones.

We leave Thursday on HAL Volendam. Two weeks ago we were offered through our TA an upgrade to a balcony for $799 pp. We turned it down. Monday our TA got notified that we were upgraded free from an FF guarantee outside to a VA balcony. Why? No clue!

Thanks everyone, especially for those that offered humour!!

I book a specific cabin, more because I'm fixated about being mid-ship. You can move me up or down, or out (I book in); but don't move me forward or aft.

I remember on the new Royal site, the profile asked that you indicate your preference for upgrades; since they didn't have a "keep me mid-ship" option, I declined to complete it.

I did get a good cabin at a great price; so I will just stick with it an enjoy the cruise.

I seems that a lot of people are now mixing "upgrade" and "upsell" together. If you have to pay "extra" money for a different cabin it is an "upsell". If you receive a better cabin for no additional money, it is an "upgrade".

The cruise lines have become smarter knowing that people will pay extra for what they once gave away.

My definition of an "upgrade" is going from inside to outside, or better. Or going from outside to balcony or better. Or going from balcony to a suite. Moving up a deck or a few cabins down the hall, to the exact same cabin, in a slightly different location, isn't an upgrade. Others think that if the cabin category is higher, even by one level, it's a wonderful upgrade. All without paying more for it.

Why someone would pay extra for something like a Princess upgrade from a cat AC to AB is beyond me. On many of their ships the cabin is no different and an AB can be right next to an AC.

Take care,
Mike

Mike, I think you have explained it as well as I've ever heard it covered but there will still be those that think if they go up a deck to the same type cabin they're getting an upgrade, or if they " only " have to pay a few dollars more to go inside to outside, it's an upgrade.
Usually the old rule of you get what you pay for applies.Once in a while you
may be moved as Mike has laid it out and truly get an up grade but don't hold your breath.
