Oh Trip,
We do hear about this kind of situation from time to time and try to tell cruisers that claim they don't need travel insurance....One person told me his regular health insurance actually covers this....first I've heard of any kind of coverage that includes this???

Wow! I'm surprised that the ship didn't stop while the evac was going on. The helicopter pilot is amazing!

I've also seen people post that their "regular" insurance covers travel and evac, but IMHO, they've been misinformed :o !

I've seen this on three cruises. It is always interesting to watch but gut wrenching to know that someone is in a life threatening situation. The most interesting was on the Get Lei'd cruise aboard Serenade of The Seas. The U.S. Coast guard had to dispatch a helicopter along with an refueling plane in order to take someone off the ship while it was 400 miles off the coast of San Francisco.

Take care,
Mike

Years ago,my gf was on a ship that she swore had a curse... among other things gone wrong, there was a medivac at night, and the Captain made an announcement for everyone to stay below deck, and NOT to take any flash pictures for the safety of all concerned...well guess what

I know someone who was evacuated from a cruise ship, because she broke her leg, and it cost her over $20,000 to get back to the USA by helicopter.
True story. There's a very good reason to always purchase insurance.

Reading insurance related incidents for over ten years here, and knowing people who have been on ships, where medivacs have happend, many people only think of age related illnesses, but...age should NOT be factored into buying insurance. It is an inexpensive, peace of mind addition, to your vacation cost..

She must of been flown by a private company and not the U.S.C.G. $20,000 thats a lot of money ,Insurance would be a lot cheaper

Default Up, Up and Away

Unfortunately, Keith and I have both used our insurance, but not for anything as dramatic as an airvac. Our insurance did pay when we needed it. But it makes me wonder about big charges, such as a medivac, and how many or how much extra/unknown charges there are.
