Default Gilbert Gottfried canned as Aflac Duck voice

I had no idea it was Gilbert Gottfried.

Gilbert Gottfried canned as Aflac Duck voice

Aflac Inc. has fired comedian Gilbert Gottfried, the voice of the Aflac Duck, for insensitive remarks he tweeted about Japan after the major earthquake and tsunami on March 11.

Gottfried tweeted: "Japan is really advanced. They don't go to the beach. The beach comes to them." He also posted: "I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, 'They'll be another one floating by any minute now."

"Gilbert's recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac," Aflac Chief Marketing Officer Michael Zuna said in a statement.

"Aflac Japan -- and, by extension, Japan itself -- is part of the Aflac family, and there is no place for anything but compassion and concern during these difficult times."

Columbus, Ga.-based Aflac (NYSE: AFL) said it will start a nationwide casting call to find a new voice for Aflac Duck. Gottfried was not the voice of the Aflac Duck in Japan.

Good for Aflac to do this. Maybe if more companies did this to "celebrities" then some of the stupidnish would stop.

Did you know....Aflac sells more cancer coverage in Japan than everywhere in the US. Soooo...Japan is key to them.

No way they could let these comments stand.

I knew Gottfried was the voice of the duck, I never liked his humor as a comedian. I admit he did a great job with the duck but he can be replaced and should be. I know "political correctness" abounds these days but that kind of thing was beyond the pale. It was thoughtless, unfunny and cruel, not to mention inexcusable.

I haven't seen lately my favorite who often appeared in the commercial. He was the Black guy who had the most hilarious looks on his face as the commercials ended around him. He is my favorite in the AFLAC commercials and I think they should highlight him more than they do.

Good. I know they have a casting call for the new voice, but I hope they can the commercials altogether. I've always hated them.

It seems to me the funny part is "how much talent does it take to squawk?" I never even wondered who the voice of the Aflac duck was - nor did I care.

Gilbert Gottfried is just another 21st century comedian. They all want to be "edgy" these days. It's sad that comedy has devolved so much that it has become more like a fraternity hazing party than real entertainment.

Gilbert Gottfried has been around nearly 40 years(as a comedian) but never really made it as a first class comic .

I always thought Gilbert Gottfried was a jerk,,,and I guess this confirms it! Never had any idea he was the Aflac Duck voice, but I'm proud of Aflac for getting rid of him.....

doesn't Warren Buffet (Berkshire Hathaway) own Aflac

I agree with all the other posters..Gilbert is a jerk and never found him funny..he's going to have a hard time finding good work for awhile (he needs to go to Japan and do community service for 3,000 hours to help with the recovery)

Tonight I watched a girl from UCLA make a utube rant about the Japanese students, calling home to find out if their relatives survived. It was outrageous, I was just appalled, by the lack of compassion.

Of course, after the fact, she made the obligatory mea culpa.

Now, supposedly she is getting death threats....can't we all just get along?

Trip,

I always thought such sites were social networking sites. I guess many folks can't tell the difference between "social" and "anti-social."

I guess that's why I love reading my notalgia magazines. Of course they had their share of idiots (back around 50-51 when my memory began to absorb things) too but at least they weren't provided a public venue to broadcast their idiocy. Truth be told, I recall from my earliest memories that people at least appeared to be more well behaved and congenial. Maybe they weren't but it sure seemed that way.

It was interesting too, on The View this morning...The panel includes 3 comics..Joy, Whoopi, and Sherrie...Sherrie was the only one of the 3 that supported his firing. Whoopi, and Joy, both defended his voice as a comedian, who has always been outrageous, anf that's why the company hired him...diverse opinions to say the least...

I was offended at the inflated Titanic 'slide' at the fair...I find this no less offensive.

How about Bobcat Goldthwaite?

You have to admit the whole marketing thing did work.

We all know the company and its mascot.

When they hired an outrageous personality, how can they then be surprised, when he is outrageous?

Trip...excellent point...often humor is used as a shield for a comic to hide either pain or something that they are very uncomfortable with

in his case, I doubt if either is the case, but again that's the problem with modern technology ..if it's on twitter or other social networks, it runs the risk of being accept not in the spirit of which it was given..needless to say the timing was wrong and I'm sure he's trying to figure out how to redeem himself..maybe he and Kramer from Seinfield can team up and do a fundraiser for both the situation in Japan and in Haiti
