Default IPhone? Ipad? They know where you are

Just heard on the news that if you have purchased an IPad or an Iphone since last summer, the chances are great that your every move is being tracked. Where you shop, where you go, every move that you make, when you made it, where you stopped, every single step you take.

Apple has yet to respond to queries.

The info is probably being provided to businesses only but nobody knows. This insidious feature was discovered by a couple of geeks that said they even were surprised when they ran across it. Again, as I understand it, it is difficult to discover even if you're a computer whiz.

Anyone who has access to your computer and your Iphone can easily obtain this information.

Sure. Everyone that owns one knows it. It's a feature that can be turned on or off. It tells you where you are and the closest gas, coffee, or whatever. Also if you lose it you can find it.

There is some discussion...
"The Guardian reports that researchers have found a hidden file on all iPhones, iPads and any computers to which they synchronize, logging timestamped latitude and longitude coordinates of the user since June 2010. A tool is available to check on your own here :
petewarden/iPhoneTracker @ GitHub

From Slashdot " Several readers have sent in follow-up articles to Wednesday's news that iPhone location data was being tracked and stored. First, it seems Android shares a similar problem, though the file containing the location data is "only accessible on devices that have been rooted and opened up to installation of unsigned apps." Developer Magnus Eriksson has created an app to flush this data. Next: the iPhone tracking file is not new, just in a different place than it used to be. Reader overThruster then points out a CNet story indicating that law enforcement has been aware of this file for some time, and has used it in a forensics context, as shown here Cellebrite - Mobile Forensics and Data transfer solutions - Mobile Forensic Products
This story is a growing concern for Apple, particularly now that Senator Al Franken and Rep. Ed Markey have both written letters to Steve Jobs demanding details about the location tracking. Finally, PCMag explains how to view the location data present on your iPhone, should you so desire here:
How to See the Secret Tracking Data in Your iPhone | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

iPhone and Location: Don't Panic
"There's a lot of blind panic out there over the discovery of a database file on the iPhone which contains dated location information. Without actually looking at the data, a lot of folks have proclaimed that the 'iPhone is tracking your every move.' I actually did take a look at the data, and it's not doing anything like that."
iPhones and Location: Let’s Not Get Hysterical. Live in The Future. It's Starting Now.

"Smartphones include geotagging features that many people aren't aware of, MIT's Technology Review reports. And it's not just in the obvious places: 'For example, by looking at the location metadata stored with pictures posted through one man's anonymous Twitter account, the researchers were able to pinpoint his likely home address. From there, by cross-referencing this location with city records, they found his name. Using that information, the researchers went on to find his place of work, his wife's name, and information about his children.'"

And then there is this....

Sigh... . I have just recently come to terms with the fact that anyone who wants to know anything about me, knows. It was very liberating !

Yeah Fern

The only thing from me being too paranoid is that I live so far out in the boonies no one can find me, even using gps. Cell phones don't work. All the maps are wrong too.

Ray,

I have the same "problem". If anyone tries to track me, out here, by my cell phone they will be off by about two miles.

Fern: You need to have your doctor take a look at that mole on your right shoulder.

Take care,
Mike

Phil and Liz,

Question. Can you prevent this feature from transmitting your info to Apple by turning it off? If so, is that easily accomplished or failing that, prevent the transmission of this data to Apple or wherever?

Just curious as I don't know a thing about these devices. My E-reader works off an Android system.

Todd

Guess who doesn't own an Iphone?

I barely use a cell phone!

I do use an Ipod touch when travelling abroad, most frequently the USA - and I live the other side of the pond.

What amuses me is we pay Apple to purchase products that can track us

Annie

The quick short answer I have found (again at Slashdot: News for nerds, stuff that matters) :
"it's reported that Apple's location collection cannot be disabled, even if you turn off "Location Services."

Read more at: Your iPhone isn’t following your every move The Sanshow

The following also from Slashdot. ( Can ya tell I like that site!)

" Google explains what they're doing, and offers the user a choice. When turning on Google Location Services on an Android phone, you get this message:
Location consent
Allow Google's location service to collect anonymous location data.
Collection will occur even when no applications are running.

Agree Disagree

Additional posts reveal:
Your location most certainly is sent back to Apple. It's in the iOS 4 license and also Apple's privacy policy :
We may collect information such as occupation, language, zip code, area code, unique device identifier, location, and the time zone where an Apple product is used so that we can better understand customer behavior and improve our products, services, and advertising.

Part of the reason for Apple to use this data is to build a similar database to Skyhook/Google's - but their privacy policy flat-out tells you that they also keep if for advertising, and that it's identifiable by time and device.

The reason the cache exists was explained at WWDC 2010 (and possibly before).

Keep in mind that not all iOS devices are cell phones, and some lack 3G data entirely, along with GPS chips. If you have Location Services turned on with an iPod Touch, and do searches in Maps, Apple sends down WiFi location data as part of the request to populate the cache.

The idea is that even though an iPod touch lacks a dedicated GPS, it could still function well enough to geotag photos (again only if people opt in), or navigate away from a conference center to some restaurant nearby.

Android stores the last 50 unique cell-derived locations (in cache.cell) and the last 200 unique wifi-derived locations (in cache.wifi). In other words, the file /is/ truncated, but based on quantity of data rather than age/time.

Apple's logfile is not truncated, whether by design or programming error.

Conversely, Apple's log remains on the device only for Core Location caching; it's stored in iPhone backups, but isn't ever sent back to the mothership (at least so far as anyone has been able to tell). Google truncates the log, but does send the data when you hit a WiFi point and have a GPS signal; they use this to update their WiFi location database for GPS assist, as they use their own service rather than Skyhook.

If your base station advertises itself, open or otherwise, go to http://samy.pl/androidmap/ [samy.pl] and enter your local router's MAC address; you can see where Google thinks that base station is, based on how Android devices have paired your station to their GPS data.

End quote.

Thanks, Mike! I'll have the doctor check it out next time !

I have an "ancient" cell phone. It only makes and takes calls and, although I've never used it for photos, takes pictures. We've got more minutes carried over than we'll ever use! I'm pretty sure it doesn't know where I am, but who knows?

My Kindle might "know" more than my phone!
