Default Help Me Decide - FOTS or Carnival Freedom?

FOTS
Pros: Kung Fu Panda Package (VIP Seating for KFP2 in 3-D, exclusive character meets, character breakfasts) , Royal Carribean, larger ship just out of dry-dock.
Cons: It sails out of Canaveral, so I have to contend with transfers from MCO. It's a late flight home - 5PM. More money.

Carnival Freedom
Pros: Better itinerary - we haven't been to Costa Rica or Panama before. Better flight home.
Cons: No Kung Fu Panda

I have both cabins on hold, but can't decide. It's an extra $1,500 (more or less) for the FOTS sailing, but it is an outside cabin. If I don't tell my kids about it, they'll never miss Kung Fu Panda. If we go with FOTS and my kids are scared of Po, (they were scared of Mickey a few years ago!) .... I will wish I saved my money.

what to do?

I don't know. How likely will your kids be scared of Po? Would this be a once in a life time chance? If not, maybe go on the cheaper cruise since you like it better and do a kids themed cruise in a year or two.

I have sailed on The Canival Liberty and Liberty OTS. The sisterships of the ones you mentioned.

I liked the Royal ships a lot more. They have more activities and are more fun.

From what I have seen on our Carnival cruises the kids all seem to have a great timne at Camp Carnival so there will be things just for them to do ( if old enough) and if the Carnival itinerary is something you really want to do tahen go for that. Some kids never do like to see/meet the big characters, so it is possible that they won't like Po.

One question, have you checked to see if there is flight into Melbourne airport or to Sanford? It may be easier to get from either to the port is you choose Royal.

Thanks for the insight everyone!

We spoke to the kids last night, and they want to meet Po. We explained that it was a guy in a costume just like the guy in the Mickey costume, and we explained that he would probably be bigger than daddy, and they still want to meet him. [I know, we took some of the magic out of it, but we wanted to be sure!].

Actually, the deal cincher was thanks to NLB, it got me looking at alternate flight options. We generally, just book Southwest and don't consdier anything else, but we are going to give Direct Air a chance. They fly into Lakeland Airport. I don't think we'll have as many car rental options, AND we have to fly in a day early and leave a day late ....but the flight is almost half of the SW flight. Fingers are crossed that Direct Air will not be a dud.

even though we do not have to fly to a cruise I do know that cost of flight can make a big difference as to what cruise to take.

Glad you were able to make decission that is good for your family.

Good, I was going to recommend Royal, just because I don't find Costa Rica or Panama that exciting.

You should be able to get decent transportation to the ship from MCO - share a limo with someone perhaps. And the airport is pretty entertaining with free wireless Internet access (as I recall or maybe not).

I think that you and the kids will enjoy the Freedom OTS.

We haven't booked yet, but the cabin is on hold until Monday. Not quite sure how she got such a long hold, but I'm waiting to see if any (better) holds fall through.

We're not flying into MCO. The airport is LAL (Lakeland). Apparently its in West Orlando (who knew Orlando was so big!). It will be (per mapquest) a 1 hour and 45 minute drive to the Port. The plan is to fly in on the 27th. drive to the port. Stay overnight, return the car, and take the hotel shuttle to the port. On the way back, we will drive to the airport, stay over night, return the car, and take the hotel shuttle to the airport.

It's a little extra travel time (another 45 minutes) over MCO .... but the good news, I'm getting the flight for $950.00!!!! It's half of what I was paying for the four of us to fly through SouthWest to MCO.

Last winter five of us (two kids, 3 adults) flew to Clearwater airport and back for $780 on Allegiant Air - from the local airport it was over $4000. Had to drive a bit, but saved $3200. The airline experience was no better or worse than the big guys, and security was a breeze by comparison due to the small airports.
The "mouse" ended up taking the money instead

We booked! FOTS! We made the right decision and the kids are super-excited. I made them a countdown chain with all the characters on them.

Ship2Shore - the only thing that concerns me now is the lack of car rental service at Lakeland. I think they are just starting commerical service so a lot of things are still being ironed out. Only Hertz is there now, however they aren't open when my plane lands. Lakeland Customer Service assures me the hours will soon coordiante with my flight times, but the proof will be in the pudding!
