Default Accupuncture Anyone?

Thinking about trying accupuncture. Have any Cruisemates tried this procedure, and, did it work for you?

Not afraid of needles, and, the pain looks insignificent, correct? What about cost....Coincidentally, this week on tv I happened to catch a segment on a local show, and there is a school here, where you can get it done by 3rd yr students, with full supervision, at a fraction of the regular cost..

They offer this procedure on ships too, now. I saw many ads on the tv on the Magic..that's where this seed was planted.

Trip.. I think it's a great idea, if your problem is that you don't have enough little holes in your body

My MIL gave me a present of taking me to Dr. Po Que (Not real name) to have a full acupuncture treatment to see if he could help the severe pain in my shoulder and back.

He put needles in me from the soles of my feet, up my legs, in the groin. Yes I said "the groin". Up my torso, my arms, my shoulders, wrists and hands. It was about 20 needles total. He also ran electric current into my feet and shoulders. (This was before my first pacemaker) After that he rolled me over and put the heated cups on my back. He then analyzed my "chi" and told me that I had kidney and liver problems. Nothing about the defective heart that I have (the long scar down the center of my chest would probably be a clue) or the neurological problems I have and subsequent medical tests show absolutely no problems with my kidneys or liver.

With all of that the results were temporarily good. I mean less than one day and my shoulder and back were hurting as bad or worse. I also looked like I had been attacked by an octopus from the marks from cups on my back.

When I returned to Minnesota it was discovered that my back and shoulder pain was pericarditis and it turned into a very severe bout of it.

I found out that the total cost of that hour was $350. I considered it a terrible waste of money and bought my MIL an equivalent present because I felt guilty for her spending that much with no real result.

I attribute the temporary relief to me being relaxed (It was relaxing) and the ever popular placebo effect.

Some people swear by it but, based on my experience, I would not do it again or "perhaps" another practitioner would do a better job.

Take care,
Mike

When I was in my twenties, I had an older friend who went all the time. She went for years, once a week. It would help for a day or two, and then she would need another treatment. I often wondered if it was in her head, that it was going to work. She always told me that it didn't hurt, because the pin went under her skin, and not actually into the body.

I say try it if you want. I am sure things have changed over the years.

Helen had the treatment while on a ship, i do remember which one, but it did nothing to relieve the pain. So, maybe some people get results BUT.

well its been around for thousands of years so there must be something to it? I would only go to a licensed practictioner, wouldn't get it done a cruise ship.

Not sure I would want to have that type of work done on a ship either, but they would have to be licensed, certainly. I could only imagine what kinds of issues might arise if they did not have those credentials.

It might be one of those things that work for the people who believe that it works. Is it just in the mind? I donít know anyone who has ever done it so really canít say. When I did call about it I asked if they thought it would help my foot I was told ďit might or it might notĒ so needless to say I didnít go!

My Father used to get it done for his back and one shoulder and it helped. He did start by going once a week and then it changed to twice a month. He did it for years.
