Default Computer question

I know many of you are computer savvy .

I am unable to get sound on my computer .Thinking it was the speakers I bought a new set but its not .

The clerk in the store suggested that I buy a sound card for $30 and for $43 they would install it .Can anyone offer a less expensive solution ?

With my limited tech knowledge...I would try going to your desktop, clicking on control panel, then click on sounds and auto devices, and check out your options....names of these options, may be different on different computers, possibly...good luck.

I am the last person who should give computer advice, but!

At a very basic level, do you have your sound muted?

Follow the steps Trip mentioned, and on the last tab, it says HARDWARE. This should show you what sound devices are installed. There is also a troubleshoot option on this tab.

Glad you got it fixed. It is almost always a setting in your control panel.

(or the cable plugged in the wrong place).

I am SO tired of sales people who won't be honest with you. At the very least he could have said "bring it into our shop and our guys will fix it"

But a new sound card? not needed.

Dfhawk was very helpful . He spent more than an hour repairing my computer via telephone .

As I've often said there are truly nice people on CM .I've met a few people in person and I look forward to meeting more.

Very nice of him. Personally, I don't mind spending a few minutes helping people, but it is vetry hard to spend an hour on the phone. When you can't see the computer its hard to know what is wrong.

My sister always seems to buy computers and load them up with gadgets like writing pads, external hard drives, games that requires DOS windows, etc.

If you can't fix a computer, you shouldn't get into computer games is my theory.

Can't help you with the "freeze" Henry but as regards your sound issue, I had the same problem. It was a brand new computer and I was frustrated as all get out. I tried everything I could think of to no avail. Queen of Oakville hit the nail on the head. My niece DeAnna came for a visit and I explained my problem. (I don't know a thing about computers). DeAnna reached over, hit a button and instantly I had sound. It was simply turned off! Duhhhh............

Henry

i am assuming the problem your having is while using the AOL 9.x software?

if your on version 9.1... then update to the latest version of the software.

the work around would be to read and send your e-mail using the web interface. go to aol.com click on the mail icon and just log in using your free aol address
