Default Gill's Cruise CEntre

This will only affect UK cruisers I think - they have ceased trading and their ABTA membership has been withdrawn.

BBC News - Gill's Cruise Centre tourist pledge as firm halts trade

A sign of the times

Gills have been in the news since Fred Olsen contacted their passengers to pay the balance direct in early June. Carnival Corp and RCCL followed soon after.
So as it stands no one has lost their holiday and the cruise lines have stated they will cover the holidays all you need to produce is your proof of purchase.
Now you can see why we pay more for our cruises than the US market the extra payment goes to insurance so when things go pear shaped the man in the street does not loose.
First reports were they went down Thursday night another company has now purchased the assets so we could see them up and running by Friday maybe under a new name

Well with one of the Major cruiselines (P&O) stopping discounts via agents, a lot will stop booking via them. I don't know how much they make on a cruise but maybe the day of the cruise specialist TA is over? A specialist department within a general agency may be the best option soon. I doubt this will be the last.

Some used to give almost all of that as discount I suppose.
What people have to realise is that even if they don't get discount they do or should get a level of service to make booking easier. Unfortunately (for them) the TA I used in Southampton was great until the one person who seemed to know what he was doing, left, after that they seldom reply to calls or emails to my satisfaction & don't appear to know the answers to questions based on experience rather than just giving the "P&O" line, which as we know varies depending on who you ask. Another one I don't use now never got back about a problem but still sends me flyers like I am their best friend. One more won't give what I ask, which is your best price(when discounts were around), but ask what prices I have. One of the major online TA's banned me from their site for no apparent reason so they lost about 50 days cruising from me in the last year or so.

I have never sailed P&O or any UK based cruiseline.

I have booked all my cruises with US TAs. They just happened to give the cheapest quote at the time I was booking.

Maybe I am being naive but as I pay by CC - if anything goes pear-shape, I will sue the cc company. Touch wood so far no issues but customer service was fair to average.

JTD - I think your experience of a local TA is as good as one particular individual is only too common. I have yet to find a competent local TA since the demise of a family firm. I prefer to give all my business locally when I can.

If the commission rate with a TA is only 5% and you can obtain an additional 5% from the cruiseline, why use a UK TA?

Annie- P&O (or maybe Carnival?) have built in 10% additional discount & have TOLD TA's selling their cruises that if they offer ANY discount they they will be removed from selling the product. If you use a good knowledgeable TA with ACTUAL hands on experience they can be invaluable in selecting & obtaining cabins. We have several short cruises booked that cabins don't matter so we just had the cheapest, but our next longish cruise we wanted a cabin in a specific area, our TA got one for us. Could we have done it? who knows? I do know that if I go online they don't show all the cabins to us.
