Default Dinner tablemates

In the course of your time on cruise ships in which you had open seating did you ever meet someone famous sitting at your dinner table ?

I sat with Denise Brown, sister of Nicole Simpson, OJ's ex wife at the Captains table, on the Liberty.

Default Dinner Tablemates

No, but I did meet singer Neil Sedaka on a cruise. He was not working but traveling as a passenger.

Indeed... over the years we've dined with or met world famous heart surgeons (whose work was instrumental in developing the "stent") , the chairman of the British ports, the Prince and Princess of Thailand, Dukes and Duchesses, famed journalist Bob Woodward, golf legend Ken Venturi, two successful playrights..... and lots of people who were friends of famous people

We have never met anyone famous however we did scare off a couple on their honeymoon.
It’s a funny story.
There were four of us in our group and than a newly married Mormon couple. It was our second night at dinner we were all talking and somehow the subject of gay people came up. I said to the couple “I have a gay brother” my one girlfriend said “ I have a gay roommate” and the other friend said “my dogs gay” The couple looked at us like we were the devil and left the table and never came back! :o

You should have steered the subject toward sex before marriage...then when he announced(as he would) ''I didn't have sex with MY wife before we married did you?'' THEN you hit 'em with "I dunno what's her name!!"

Ten years ago I attended a HS reunion .Everyone was introducting themselves .A woman came over to the group of people I was with and said in a rather loud voice "Hi ,everyone ,I'm Gay ."People were startled until they realized Gay was her first name.

The lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) and I were having lunch aboard "Mariner of the Seas" a year or so ago, when I noticed that one of the two gentlemen who joined us at the table looked familiar. They both laughed, and then admitted that he was Arch Deal, who was a news anchor on T.V. in Tampa for many, many years. We did have a very interesting conversation. (The other guy was his brother-in-law, and he laughed and said not to get Arch started, or we'd never get away from the table.) He was correct!

My wife is always speaking to people she thinks she knows but are actually on TV..they are patient with her....
I am amazed at the pleasant people we have had as dinner companions only one couple were a bit off, but bearable. We were on an officer's table on P&O & have remained in contact with him, he is now quite a senior officer with Carnival UK.

love it!

to answer henry's question.... no, never. with any luck, i get to avoid Danny Bonaduce (partridge family) on our FOTS cruise. Apparently, he and his loyal radio fans are the big "group' on our cruise.

I certainly agree with that, and we have had dinner with many wonderful, interesting people.

In 2005, we cruised the "Mexican Riviera" on the Mercury. The first night, we found ourselves seated at a table for 10, which was great. Then another couple showed up who apparently were friends of one of the seated couples and had requested to be seated with them and they were adamant about doing just that. The maitre'd arrived, the poor waiter was waiting to take the orders and they would not budge. So my husband and I offered to move-after all, we didn't know anyone to start with so it made no difference to us. BIG mistake. We ended up at a table for six with the most obnoxious man I've ever met. He was with his wife and her two lady friends. No one was able to get a word in-he had been everywhere, knew everything and had no interest in what anyone else had to stay. Even the two lady friends kept rolling their eyes in exasperation. We stuck it out for 3 nights and finally went to our head waiter begging to be moved. He was very sympathetic (he's visited the table) but said he had noting except a table under the staircase. "We'll take it!" we said in unison. Well, it turned out to be a table for 4 and our table mates were one of the ships lecturers and his wife-the most enjoyable dinner mates. He was a patent attorney from CA-not exactly a celebrity but the closest we've come!

I once sat with the brother of Bob Hope. He was hopeless.

Going on from the post where a dominant personality was present, sometimes conversation is "hard going" at first, I generally try to stimulate things if I can & if nobody is bringing much up I try to ....It has concerned me at times if I dominate but if nobody is saying anything?????

If I was one of your tablemates, I would enjoy your conversation and do my share of participation.

Thank you very kind but when I see posts that say someone was ''going on a bit'' I do wonder was it me!! Unlike some forum sites though most people we meet enjoy our company, conversation & sense of humour.

Oh we tried, we really tried. After 3 nights, we threw in the towel ! DH is generally pretty quiet but I love to chat with tablemates-about anything, but it was clear that this particular gentleman wasn't interested in a conversation, just his own running commentary. But it all turned out well and we ended up with a great couple-the one and only time we've been at a table for 4.

I Gentleman that I met at lunch while sailing on the Celebrity Infinity (Hawaiian Cruise ) was Bob Basso. He was very interesting and easy to have a converstion with. Bob is an author who has published several books.
