Default Stupidest Commercials

If you've been watching the baseball playoffs you've seen the spot that's running saturation for Nissan pickup trucks. The scene: an airport. A woman turns from looking out at the airfield to a TV set where an old 727 is making an emergency landing. Evidently the nosewheel is pranged, so after setting the jet down nicely on the main gear, the brilliant pilot gently nestles the nosewheel into the bed of the heroic pickup truck zipping along smartly in front of the aircraft. Meanwhile, a font in the lower right says, "Fictionalization. Do not attempt."

So, if I were a potential pickup truck buyer, I'm trying to figure out what my "take away" from this spot is supposed to be. The whole thing is a clever piece of animation, which the sponsor has told us is absolutely fictitious, not to say suicidal if attempted in real life. But it is good to be warned that I shouldn't try this at home, in case I'm tempted to roll out that 727 with a bad nose gear that's up on blocks in the back yard.

Then there is the one with the gaggle of young marrieds sitting around drinking coffee and asking each other whether they've done anything about their kids' college funds. Turns out none of them have except for one brilliant Mom who's discovered a college fund administered by a baby food company, that throws in a life insurance policy for the kid. "It's worry free."

Of course it is. And I'm buying my baby food from Fidelity. Don't get me started.

AR,

You're absolutely right! Actually I've found local ads far more effective than the national ones, even though they're hokey.

The ad you refer to is absurd and so obviously staged by professionals. Number one, when is the last time you ever saw a B-727 with no markings on it?

The ad where the man steps out of the bathroom and says "throw me a roll" and gets one side of his hair shaved off. Why doesn' he store his toilet paper in the bathroom? Wouldn't that make more sense?

How about the three "idiots" who do "dumb things, with smart phones"? I guess it drives me crazy, because I've seen very nearly the same thing, in real life, and frankly, I have no idea what they're trying to advertise????!

Because that's where he keeps his canned goods, of course!

Now why didn't I think of that?

The one that annoys me the most right now is a telephone ad where the wife bawls out her husband for getting unlimited calls to other cells, and he tells her it was free when he signed up for unlimited messaging -- or texts -- or something. I can't watch it, so I'm obviously tuning it out.

The first time the "pranged 727" came up, my husband and I both reacted with, "...and the landing speed of that jet is?"

Ha! Me too. I'm guessing it's maybe 130-140mph. Sky would probably know.
