Henry,

I tend to lean toward the classical Hymns at Christmas. I also love Silver Bells and a host of others.

I also love the rousing Jewish music especially (even if it doesn't have anything to do with Hannukah and forgive me for my misspelling) Hava Nagila (I spelled it phonetically ).

One of our favourites is Sankta Lucia (or Saint Lucia/Lucy) the bringer of light in the Northern European countries.

Her festival days is Today December 13th, and the song is repeated in the villages as a chosen blonde haired girl enters the village or church carrying a candle, with more lit candles forming a crown in her hair (ouch, and has Health & Safety seen this )

A picture of this can be seen at File:Lucia-13.12.06.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We have witnessed this a few times whilst on cruise ships in & around the Baltic states, and it send shivers down the spine every time.

My favorite is "The Christmas Song", better known as Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, by Nat King Cole. IMO, that's a beautiful song, and I've been privileged to sing it myself, a few times.

My favorite is Silver Bells.

However I also love to hear I'm dreaming of a white Christmas. I remember hearing that when I got to Vietnam on dec 23 1966, and we felt that we would never have a Christmas in the States again.

My favorite is " Oh Come all Ye Faithfull." When perforemed by a choir backed up by a full orchestra it is absolutely beautiful!

That song has always been part of the Nativity finale at the Radio City Music Hall Christmas show. When our musically-inclined "third kid" (not really our kid but the son of best friends) Bryan was in his 20's, he conducted the orchestra at Radio City for the Christmas Show--and back then--the Easter Show as well.

Although he wrote a great many arrangements for the show himself, he once told me that the arrangement of "Faithful" that they use is a classic chart done for Radio City by the legendary Percy Faith. Bryan conducted well over 1000 performances of the Radio City show (sometimes as many as five a day). He said he never got sick of conducting that song, with that big orchestra and chorus. . .and that really classy arrangement.

There is a DVD of the 75th anniversary version of the Christmas Show (long after Bryan left so it's not him conducting), but they use the same arrangement, followed by a great new chart of Joy to the World. If you play your DVDs through a great sound system you will be rewarded by these. Even if you don't, they're still good. It's a terrific orchestra--Bryan always said it was a pleasure to stand before them.

Me, I like Feliz Navidad, because it's Feliciano. And when I think of Feliciano I think of a lot of things that he overcame. . .his own blindness as well as the blindness and bigotry of some Americans (remember 1968?) Plus it's a fun song in its own right.

Not to be picky, but credit where it's due: Although the great Nat King Cole recorded the most often played versions, the song is "by" the also great Mel Torme (with Bob Wells), who also recorded it several times, and whose versions I personally prefer. Torme was very special.

A friend once wrote new lyrics beginning with "Children roasting on an open fire. . ." But we won't go there.

Wow we have over 40 Christmas CDs and counting. I think I might go with Joy to the World. Since we are doing YouTube links I'll add the California Raisins version:
