Passport Book vs. Passport Card ??? I'm a little confused

We are going on the Allure OTS in May and have to get a Passport for my 2 1/2 year old son. This is his first cruise and my wife, daughter and I all have Passports. I'm a little confused with how they describe the Passport Card it reads as follows from the .gov website. "Valid when entering the US from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry. NOT VALID FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL BY AIR".

So my question is...If for some reason we were in the Caribbean and had to fly home from say the Bahamas, St. Thomas, or St. Maarten for an emergency would we be able to with my son because he has a passport card? Or should I just get the regular Passport book and not worry about this? thanks

Get the book. The child would not be able to fly even in an emergency and would have to get a passport issued by an embassy or consulate which could take days.

Yep, I believe the passport "card" is meant to be something of a quick border check for land crossings to Mexico and Canada. Those two coutries used to only require ID (like a driver's license) but they upped the requirement to passport - but they added the "passport card" as a compromise for the people who cross often but can't afford a real passport.

The folio passport (regular passport) will get you anywhere you are allowed to go - it is always the best option.
