Weve all heard the names the Captain of the Concordia has been called.
I just got an email from NCL assuring me that their Captains are of the highest quality. How the "f" do they know? Is there a secret process we know nothing about? To me, it seems you can only establish a captains (and crews) honor and valiance by putting them in a life threatening situation. Simulations just do not cut it. How do we avoid another "chicken of the seas" incident in the future? Cruise lines can avoid hitting rocks, just be more careful. But how can you avoid rank cowerdice?

I believe firmly that all cruise ship Captains have gone through an extensive evaluation process and a huge amount of training. In an emergency I think that the vast majority can be counted on to act in a calm professional manner.
BUT -- when you know you are wrong, things change. The Captain of the Concordia was simply worried about his own ass and lost his professional capability. When he realized that he had destroyed his ship and his career by taking his girlfriend in too close to shore, all possibility of doing anything else right was lost in his panic.
I saw this email pop up on my phone as I was driving to work, but hadn't had a chance to read it yet. It's interesting to say the least, and kind in bad form I think. But c'est la vie.

My opinions are mine and mine alone. They do not represent the opinions of The Walt Disney Company nor any of its subsidiaries.
Who knows how any of us would react when faced with extreme danger?
As I've stated previously I was working on the 20th.floor of an office building . A fire started and people were literally pushing people downstairs and stepping on them .

I think you nailed it, MercedMike. This is a one-off event. But how does one keep these arrogant, misoginistic show-offs from rising to Captain status in the first place?
Maybe former military would be a more reliable option? Or Coast Guard? Just throwing that out there.
Did anyone else get the nice letter from Mr. Sheehan at NCL?

I'm not sure if this is true but several years ago I was told that many of the Jet Blue pilots were ex-Navy flyers .
The military has been a major supplier of pilots for all airlines. Fight training is very expensive and racking up the hours required for a commercial pilot takes a long time. Military flying is a very good way to get there.
Interestingly, as far as I know, there is very little overlap between merchant marine officers and Naval officers. In general, to get command of any major ship requires a long term career military officer so I guess by then they are committed.

I agree with you 100%.
