I got a call early this morning letting me know that one of my school friends passed away last night . Davy Jones was his alltime favorite singer .Its kind of eerie . My friend was in the music business until retiring last year .

Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz were probably my first "crushes". I LOVED the Monkees, never missed their shows and had all their albums.
Despite the fact that many critics still say their music was "fabricated", it was still better than anything out there today...
Rest in Peace Davy...
While yes, they did bring in outside musicians, few ever knew that they were themselves musicians and relatively accomplished ones at that.

Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith were both accomplished musicians. Mike Nesmith had some very good solo albums after the Monkees. Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz were actors and had theatricle musical backgrounds. Dolenz did learn to play the drums for the role and subsequent concerts.
Davy did a long time stint in Oliver and how many folks remember Mickey Dolenz as "Circus Boy".
They were the original "Boy Band" but I have to say that a lot of their music wasn't too bad.
Take care,
Mike
